Background / History

Gion has practiced swordsmanship since childhood. Her great-grandmother came from Wano Country and taught her its etiquette, hoping she would someday visit the homeland. Gion later describes arriving there on a dangerous Marine assignment as an unexpectedly painful fulfillment of that wish 200 551 620.

Her mother entrusted Tsuru with sending her into the Marines and looking after her. At the training camp, Zephyr taught Gion perseverance rather than reassuring her that gender made no difference to swordsmanship. She also recalls attending his explanation of Devil Fruit awakenings when Kuzan graduated 486 620.

Gion’s ambition is to become the world’s greatest swordsman and prove that a woman can hold that title. Before becoming close to Reg, her rigid manner earned her descriptions such as “girl made of steel” and “ironclad straight girl” 145 463.

Gion begins as earnest, reserved, and unusually formal. She rarely smiles in her early appearances and struggles to address Tsuru casually even when invited to do so. On duty, however, she immediately becomes efficient and focused, taking detailed notes and preparing to relay orders 106.

Her understanding of justice becomes increasingly personal. After investigating corruption in North Blue, she chooses to help people directly rather than dwell on distant ideals. She learns to judge individuals through their actions instead of treating Marine and pirate labels as sufficient explanations of good and evil 180 212 218 221.

She is fiercely protective of companions and civilians, sometimes at considerable risk to herself. She refuses to abandon Eileen to Doflamingo and continues fighting despite severe injuries. Her growing independence culminates in rejecting the idea that she exists merely as an “accessory” to Reg or anyone else 377 589 609 620.

Gion’s emotional restraint does not make her indifferent. She becomes jealous of Cristo before understanding her past, struggles with guilt over Ohara, and can lose her composure when Reg is endangered. Gion accompanies Tsuru’s operation against the Donquixote Pirates and fights Trebol alongside Basha. After Reg saves her, she awakens at Kokoro’s scrapyard and asks about her unidentified rescuer 106 110 114.

At Sabaody, she intervenes when thugs attack Reg, not knowing his connection to her rescue. He introduces himself as Gray and helps her evade Tokikake’s pursuit. Their outing gives her an opportunity to explain her ambition as a female swordswoman, while the World Nobles’ violence brings her Marine identity and questions of justice into their conversation 144 145 146.

North Blue Corruption and Reg’s Identity

Gion releases Cricket so she can investigate his allegations against the 177th Branch. Her inquiry confirms that Colonel Kuri falsified reports, exploited soldiers’ pay, withheld bounties, and committed serious corruption 212 218.

Reg’s letter reveals the connection between Gray and her rescuer. Gion subsequently warns him about the World Government’s search and the Shichibukai system, then brings the matter to Tsuru. Their reunion at Headquarters takes place openly but formally, with both recognizing one another 218 219 220 229.

Rainbase and the Golden Lion Battle

Gion and Eileen hold Rainbase’s entrance against Korbi, refusing to retreat because civilians are behind them. Gion suffers numerous wounds but improves her swordsmanship during the confrontation 376 377.

After becoming a rear admiral, she is recalled from North Blue to serve as Tsuru’s aide during the Golden Lion campaign. When Reg and Cristo are trapped, she requests permission to join the battle and seeks artillery support. Tsuru later explains that her intervention could have made her another person Reg needed to protect 391 409 423 427.

Ohara and Her Crisis of Justice

Assigned to the Ohara operation, Gion questions whether the scholars deserve execution but remains conscious of a soldier’s obligation to obey orders. The destruction leaves her burdened by guilt 483 499.

Tsuru challenges her to change what she finds unacceptable. When Reg later discusses the incident with her, he conceals his connection to the Revolutionary Army; Gion begins studying the documents he provides and continues pursuing her own understanding of justice 498 499.

Wano Infiltration, Capture, and Breakthrough

Gion accepts the mission to capture Doflamingo in Wano and secures Reg’s assistance. She infiltrates Orochi’s residence through performance and deception, working with Wyper to retrieve an item 549 551 559 561.

During the Onigashima retreat, Doflamingo uses captive Eileen as bait. Gion knowingly follows Lao G into the trap and surrenders to protect her friend. In captivity, she refuses to provide information about Reg or accept Doflamingo’s claim that she is merely a man’s accessory 588 589 592 609.

After her rescue, Gion cuts her hair and returns to confront Doflamingo. Fighting to give the dungeon’s dead peace, she perseveres through severe injuries, becomes a Sword Master, and defeats him. She shows compassion but refuses to release him because of his crimes; Doflamingo then deliberately impales himself on her sword 610 620 621.

Departure from the Marines

After the Wano battles, Reg tells Gion that he intends to overthrow the World Government. She remains committed to him while confronting the conflict between that future and her Marine allegiance 624.

By the final war, she has left the Marines. Wearing Kingdom of Zh attire, she returns with Izo to deliver a warning about the Five Elders’ plan. Sengoku attacks her, and Garp exposes his earlier betrayal.
