Background
Usopp lived in Syrup Village, where he regularly visited Kaya and entertained her with stories. He insists that his stories are genuine adventures, even when they are clearly exaggerated or fabricated. His local “pirate crew” consists of Pepper, Onion, and Carrot, who address him as Captain Usopp. 13 16
His father is Yasopp, a pirate and Shanks’s top sniper. Although Yasopp did not return when Usopp’s mother died, Usopp continues to believe that his father is a brave warrior of the sea. This belief shapes Usopp’s own ambition to become a brave, strong sea warrior who does not fear hardship. 16
Appearance
Usopp is recognizable by his unusually long nose and his brown, workman-like clothing. 13
- Long nose.
- Brown work pants and a brown vest.
- Light-brown headscarf with goggles attached. 13
Personality
Usopp habitually inflates his accomplishments, introducing himself as a great pirate with millions of subordinates and later claiming command of 8,000 men. His bravado often collapses when faced with real danger; he faints after learning that Luffy and Aaron are genuine pirates and attempts to feign illness when asked to face a monster. 13 16
Despite his fearfulness, Usopp wants to become courageous rather than merely appear courageous. He confronts Arlong’s forces despite being vastly outmatched, protects Aaron during the battle at Arlong Park, and later apologizes sincerely to Aaron for insulting his parents. 30 33 41
Abilities & Skills
Ranged Combat
Usopp uses projectile attacks in combat, including explosive ammunition.
- Fired a Justice Drop at Arlong, though it did not injure him. 30
- Used explosive stars against Chew and later fired an explosive round at Arlong to create an opening for Aaron. 35
- His combat skill is initially limited, and he struggles when surrounded by numerous fish-man opponents. 33
Bubble-Solution Techniques
Aaron gave Usopp roughly a dozen bottles of bubble solution. Usopp initially treated the substance as a valuable trump card and developed bubble techniques that impressed Aaron. 19
- Stopped treating it as a regular technique after learning that the solution came from Aaron’s bodily fluids. 19
- Could not successfully blow a bubble when attempting to help transport Dragon Lord. 49
Storytelling and Deception
Usopp is an accomplished liar and improviser, capable of confidently inventing tales and maintaining a pirate-captain persona.
- Regularly tells Kaya adventure stories. 13
- Claimed to command 30 million subordinates when he first met the Straw Hats. 13
- Uses exaggerated declarations to bolster his own courage during confrontations. 30 35

Story Role / Major Arcs
Syrup Village Arc
Usopp first meets Aaron after colliding with him in Syrup Village. He boasts about commanding 30 million subordinates, but Luffy, Nami, and Zoro quickly expose the lie. When he discovers that they are real pirates, he faints from fear. 13
After Klahadore humiliates him for being a liar unworthy of Kaya, Usopp confides his dream of becoming a brave warrior of the sea. Luffy’s confirmation that Yasopp is a real pirate gives him renewed conviction. 16
Following the defeat of the Black Cat Pirates, Usopp decides to leave Syrup Village and join Luffy’s crew. 18
Early Straw Hat Voyage
Usopp helps establish the crew’s identity by drawing a pirate flag, though Luffy rejects the first version because it resembles Usopp rather than the captain. 19
He receives Aaron’s bubble solution and experiments with it as a potential combat resource. He also becomes increasingly exhausted by Aaron’s constant hamburgers, to the point that the sight of them makes him feel ill. 19 20
Arlong Park Arc
Usopp arrives at Cocoyasi Village and openly challenges Arlong, declaring himself the captain of 8,000 men. Arlong easily withstands his attack, but Usopp continues fighting against the fish-men. 30
During the final battle, Usopp struggles against fish-man lackeys and Chew, but he protects Aaron and later uses an explosive shot to interrupt Arlong’s assault on him. 33 35
Warship Island and Lost Island
Usopp remains the crew’s cautious voice when Aaron launches the Going Merry over a Marine encirclement, questioning Luffy’s trust in the risky escape plan. 48
On Lost Island, he unsuccessfully attempts to blow a bubble large enough to transport Dragon Lord, demonstrating that Aaron’s bubble-making technique requires more finesse than brute force. 49
