Background

Aaron was born in the Sabaody Archipelago. While traveling from Loguetown to locate one of his mother’s younger sisters, his family’s ship was destroyed in a storm; both of his parents died, leaving him stranded alone on a barren reef. After three days without water or food, the starving eleven- or twelve-year-old ate a square yellow sponge he had caught while fishing, then collapsed in pain. 1 2

He was rescued by Marines and awakened aboard Vice Admiral Garp’s warship. Soon afterward, Aaron discovered that he could absorb water, while his emotions became unusually volatile: he would abruptly alternate between laughter, grief, melancholy, and excitement. Garp considered him a potential counter to Devil Fruit users and repeatedly attempted to recruit him into the Marines, but Aaron refused. 2

Garp brought Aaron to Foosha Village, where Makino recognized him as her sister’s son. Aaron lived and worked at Makino’s tavern, becoming known to villagers as a helpful but deeply eccentric boy with an infectious laugh and a talent for hamburgers. He befriended Luffy, Ace, and Sabo during this period. 3

After a time skip, Aaron set sail alongside Luffy despite his initial reluctance. He became one of Luffy’s earliest companions, accompanying him through the East Blue and onward toward the Grand Line. 4 41

Appearance

Aaron is a blond, fair-skinned boy with a slight build, shallow dimples, and a youthful face. At the time of his shipwreck, he was described as eleven or twelve years old; in his normal form, he stands roughly 1.4 meters tall. 1 8 16

  • Golden hair, initially left dry and dull after his time stranded on the reef. 1
  • Normally frail-looking despite his unusual resilience. 14 16
  • Frequently wears an absent-minded or brightly smiling expression. 3 8
  • His transformed state expands him into a roughly three-meter-tall mass of exaggerated muscle while retaining his delicate face. 14
  • His muscle form is frequently depicted wearing only pink underwear after his normal clothes tear apart during transformation. 17 37

Personality

Aaron is extremely optimistic, impulsive, and distractible. He can move on from sorrow with startling speed, often focusing instead on immediate needs such as survival, hamburgers, fishing nets, or a strange object that catches his attention. His tendency to take statements literally and miss obvious social cues makes communication difficult for people around him, particularly Ace, Sabo, and Zoro. 1 3 7

Despite his scatterbrained behavior, Aaron is compassionate. He brings food to Zoro when Zoro is imprisoned, refuses Arlong’s offer to abandon Luffy, attempts to prevent violence between humans and fish-men, and risks himself to protect his companions. 8 29 30 35

His carefree demeanor conceals lingering grief over his parents’ deaths. Remembering them in Loguetown causes him to cry intensely enough to flood the Going Merry’s deck, though he later accepts Usopp’s apology over the subject without hesitation. 40 41

Abilities & Skills

Sponge-Derived Physiology

Aaron’s powers appear connected to the square sponge he consumed while shipwrecked, though neither he nor his crew can fully explain the phenomenon. 1 13

  • Can absorb and expel water through his body. 2
  • Can flatten into a two-dimensional drawing-like state and return to normal. 5
  • Possesses elasticity, including the ability to stretch his limbs. 4 13
  • Is highly resistant to cutting; Axe-Hand Morgan repeatedly split him apart without permanently injuring him. 8
  • Regenerates severe damage by restoring his body with water, including after decapitation. 8 44
  • Can swim, breathe, and speak underwater despite being human. 27
  • Can run across the sea at high speed. 28

Muscle Form

Jango’s hypnosis awakened Aaron’s hidden potential, transforming him from a frail child into a towering muscle-bound form. 14

  • The form reaches approximately three meters in height and possesses immense physical strength. 14 15
  • Its muscles are highly elastic and resistant to blades. 14 15
  • Aaron was initially controlled in this state by Jango’s hypnosis. 14 16
  • He later learned to activate and control the transformation consciously. 17
  • Ordinary clothing tears apart during transformation; Kaya’s elastic bodysuit was able to withstand it. 16 17

Bubble Manipulation

Aaron can produce large bubbles and bubble solution from his body. 9 19

  • His bubbles can detonate in chain reactions when punctured. 9
  • He can stop explosions by absorbing or controlling his bubbles. 9
  • Created a Dirty Bubble to trap Marines and an illusionary bubble to distract Smoker. 41
  • Can form giant Bubble Men for defense and combat, including a Bubble Giant that protected Usopp. 33 34
  • The Bubble Men possess independent consciousnesses; Aaron considers them beings formed from consciousnesses within his body and calls them his children. 49

Healing

Aaron can use his bodily fluids to restore injuries.

  • He healed injuries suffered by Luffy and Sanji after the encounter with Momoo. 28
  • He treated Zoro’s chest wound from Mihawk, healing the internal damage while deliberately leaving the scar intact at Zoro’s request. 29
  • His healing liquid can also violently stimulate a person awake, as shown when he revived Usopp after Aaron’s laughter knocked him unconscious. 47

Sponge Karate

After being sent flying by Kuroobi, Aaron attempted to adapt Fish-Man Karate to his own physiology. A ghostly woman helped him understand how to use his body to throw a proper punch. 31

  • Aaron calls his version Sponge Karate. 33
  • He used it against Kuroobi during the battle at Arlong Park. 33
  • Kuroobi considered Aaron physically too weak to match his own long-trained Fish-Man Karate. 33

Cooking

Aaron is intensely devoted to making hamburgers and dreams of becoming the best hamburger maker, catching the biggest jellyfish, and blowing the most beautiful bubbles. 8

  • His cooking can produce burgers that attract and influence those who eat them. 3 29
  • His spatula was previously enhanced by his master, a Kitchenware Fruit user whose cooking could grant special functions to kitchenware. 27
  • The spatula can increase the addictiveness of Aaron’s food; Aaron also noted an apparent toxicity property. 29
  • Aaron believes the spatula can evolve through continued cooking and greater customer approval. 37
  • His cooking is inconsistent and dangerous: the Straw Hats seek another cook because his meals are often inedible or hazardous, and one Baratie customer died after eating his pudding. 20 23

Equipment

  • Spatula — Aaron’s primary cooking utensil; its special functions increase through cooking. 27 29 37
  • Shovel — A kitchen tool given to Aaron by his master. It can slash through clothing, though Aaron considers it insufficiently durable and difficult to use effectively. 7 13 27
  • Magic Conch — A conch Aaron consults for guidance; it instructed him to “go home” when he asked how to become strong at karate and helped him summon a Bubble Giant. 33
  • Bubble water — Bottled bodily fluid used to create bubbles; Usopp later employed it as a combat resource. 19 35
