Background

Aaron was born in the Sabaody Archipelago. While traveling from Loguetown to locate one of his mother’s younger sisters, his family’s ship was destroyed in a storm; both of his parents died, leaving him stranded alone on a barren reef. After three days without water or food, the starving eleven- or twelve-year-old ate a square yellow sponge he had caught while fishing, then collapsed in pain. 1 2

He was rescued by Marines and awakened aboard Vice Admiral Garp’s warship. Soon afterward, Aaron discovered that he could absorb water, while his emotions became unusually volatile: he would abruptly alternate between laughter, grief, melancholy, and excitement. Garp considered him a potential counter to Devil Fruit users and repeatedly attempted to recruit him into the Marines, but Aaron refused. 2

Garp brought Aaron to Foosha Village, where Makino recognized him as her sister’s son. Aaron lived and worked at Makino’s tavern, becoming known to villagers as a helpful but deeply eccentric boy with an infectious laugh and a talent for hamburgers. He befriended Luffy, Ace, and Sabo during this period. 3

After a time skip, Aaron set sail alongside Luffy despite his initial reluctance. He became one of Luffy’s earliest companions, accompanying him through the East Blue and onward toward the Grand Line. 4 41

Aaron is a blond, fair-skinned boy with a slight build, shallow dimples, and a youthful face. At the time of his shipwreck, he was described as eleven or twelve years old; in his normal form, he stands roughly 1.4 meters tall. 1 8 16

Despite his scatterbrained behavior, Aaron is compassionate. He brings food to Zoro when Zoro is imprisoned, refuses Arlong’s offer to abandon Luffy, attempts to prevent violence between humans and fish-men, and risks himself to protect his companions. 8 29 30 35

His carefree demeanor conceals lingering grief over his parents’ deaths. Remembering them in Loguetown causes him to cry intensely enough to flood the Going Merry’s deck, though he later accepts Usopp’s apology over the subject without hesitation. 40 41
