Background / History
Tornado was isolated by the frightening power she was born with. An elderly nun was once the only person she truly let into her heart; the nun's death reinforced Tornado's belief that connections with others were worthless and should be severed. 9
The Science Force brought her to Mary Geoise but could not identify the source of her abilities. Tornado understood that the World Government had placed her in the Cipher Pol Agent Academy to restrain the occasions when her power went berserk and to condition her into serving the government. 6 7
At the academy, Tornado was an unusually indulged but disruptive trainee, already capable of overpowering other students and ignoring instructors. Her resolve to protect and raise her younger sister, Blizzard, became her defining ambition. 4 7
Appearance
Tornado is a very petite girl with messy, short green hair and a delicate build. Her short stature remains a major insecurity; her own power inadvertently prevented her from growing normally. 4 17
- Short, untidy green hair. 4
- Extremely short and childlike in build, even after years pass. 69
- Usually floats rather than walks when she chooses. 5 7
- Wore a fitted black cheongsam-style dress with a high collar and thigh slits for her outing with Bred at Sabaody. 146
Personality
Tornado is proud, confrontational, and deeply dismissive of rules or authority. She readily insults, intimidates, and physically attacks people she dislikes, including Minister Honest, Cipher Pol's highest-ranking official. 4 6 69 She is easily bored by routine training and administrative work, preferring excitement, travel, and the prospect of freedom. 69 73 89 93
Despite her aggressive behavior, Tornado is intensely protective of those she accepts. Her younger sister Blizzard is her foremost priority, while Bred becomes the friend whose acceptance allows her to open up after years of isolation. 7 9 She often masks concern or embarrassment with insults and denial, particularly around Bred. 8 11 146
Her fixation on height is severe. Comparisons with taller people can upset her immediately, and she privately aspires to grow through “Grow-Taller Milk” and stretching exercises. 17 19 93
Abilities & Skills
Unidentified Innate Power
Tornado possesses an unexplained inborn power that the Science Force could neither identify nor fully control. It grants overwhelming destructive force and makes her the strongest combatant among the academy's trainees. 6 7 11
- Flight — She can levitate and fly freely, allowing her to bypass barriers and move faster than most trainees can follow. 6 18
- Protective force — She enveloped Bred in a protective layer while he trained blindfolded on the academy's mountain. 8
- Wind and storm creation — She dispersed poisonous gas with a violent gale and created an enormous storm in the Calm Belt. 11 91
- Telekinetic-like force — She forcibly gathered dozens of tiger-headed monsters and crushed them into pulp. 91
- Thundercloud manipulation — She once sent Instructor Bill into thunderclouds for a night after he entered her room. 11
- Limitation: stamina — Her immense output is not inexhaustible in practice; prolonged exertion can exhaust her. 91
- Control issue — Her power can occasionally go berserk, which was one reason the Science Force sent her to the academy. 7
Life Energy and Nen
Tornado awakened life energy at an unprecedented pace and immediately grasped the basic use of Ten. 16
- Ten — Seals life energy within the body, strengthening it and reducing needless energy loss. 16
- Exceptional reserves — Anderson described her life energy as so immense that it seemed inexhaustible. 16
- Advanced instinct — Anderson noted that she already knew how to “entangle” her life energy when she awakened it. 16
Combat Ability
Even without formal mission experience, Tornado's raw power and temperament make her a dangerous combatant.
- Slapped Melard Auberg more than ten meters away, then pinned her to the ground when Melard threatened Bred. 9
- Her reputation and strength were sufficient to protect Bred's academy smuggling operation from interference. 13
- She could assault and humiliate Minister Honest without fear of reprisal. 69
- The World Government considers her safety important enough that an eight-person expedition was ordered to prioritize protecting her above all else. 90
Relationships
- Bred Hyman — Her closest friend and frequent companion. Tornado initially befriended him partly to make herself appear taller, but later protected him, relied on him for emotional support, and confessed romantic feelings; Bred continues to define their relationship as friendship. 5 8 69 146
- Blizzard — Tornado's younger sister. Tornado's central dream is to raise and protect Blizzard from harm. 7 74
- Esdeath — Fellow academy prodigy and former partner in misbehavior. Their relationship develops into rivalry, especially as Tornado grows jealous of Esdeath's power and attention from Bred. 4 16 70
- Melard Auberg — An unwanted admirer whose romantic pursuit Tornado repeatedly rejects. Tornado violently warned Melard never to harm Bred. 9 18
- Father Anderson — Nen instructor and later a member of the expedition assigned to protect her. 15 16 90
- Minister Honest — Cipher Pol's highest-ranking official, whom Tornado openly bullies and disregards. He nevertheless treats her as one of the government's most valuable assets. 69 74
- Science Force — The government scientists responsible for studying her power and restricting her activities. 7 19
Story Role / Major Arcs
Cipher Pol Agent Academy
Tornado first appears as a disruptive academy student who boasts about forcing children who called her short to lie on the ground. She quickly befriends Bred, helps him claim a prime classroom seat, and becomes one of his closest companions. 4 5 6
As Bred trains himself, Tornado begins to reveal her own fears: her power's unknown origin, the World Government's intentions toward her, and her desire to protect Blizzard. She supports Bred's dangerous Observation Haki training despite pretending not to care. 7 8 11
Nen Awakening and Separation
Tornado awakens life energy and Ten alongside Bred and Esdeath, astonishing the academy instructors. Her concern that Ten might prevent her from growing taller leads to a prolonged emotional outburst once she learns her height may remain unchanged. 16 17
When Minister Honest selects Bred and other prodigies for a special mission, the Science Force refuses to release Tornado. She remains at the academy and later undertakes a Cipher Pol internship. 19 51
Reunion and Agent Experience
After years apart, Tornado reunites with Bred in Mary Geoise while bullying Minister Honest. Frustrated that the government will not permit her to undertake missions, she eagerly accepts Bred's offer to let her experience an agent's life beside him. 69
Bred encourages her to develop her extraordinary power as the path to eventual freedom. Tornado later joins his expedition to locate a summoning beast, where her immense destructive power proves vital against poisonous gas and magical beasts. 70 90 91
Later Training and Feelings for Bred
Tornado eventually follows Bred's advice and trains seriously, with Minister Honest believing that she may one day grow powerful enough to defeat an otherwise nearly unstoppable opponent. 115
Her jealousy of Esdeath and other women around Bred becomes increasingly overt. During a visit to Sabaody's amusement park, Tornado confesses her feelings, but Bred gently insists that she is one of his few friends rather than a romantic partner. 145 146
