Ch. 1Indra's Grades Are Not So Ideal
Plot points and events
- Set in Year 37 of the Hidden Leaf, as the Second Shinobi World War intensifies. Indra has just graduated from the Ninja Academy despite poor grades and fears his weak skills will make it hard to survive the wars and the future Uchiha massacre.
- He hopes to use his connection with Tsunade to secure a safer role, such as medical or logistics work, and possibly leave Konoha with her later.
- Tsunade arrives at Indra’s inn while fleeing debt collectors. The two fool the men by pretending to be siblings, then share a meal.
- Indra confronts Tsunade about her unpaid loans and proposes that she train him and his peer, Uchiha Mikoto. Tsunade initially refuses, but agrees after Indra offers to forgive her debts and share a large gambling windfall.
- At the casino, Tsunade loses heavily while Indra wins. She gets drunk and falls asleep; Indra takes her back to the room and stays to keep watch.
- While refining Chakra, Indra notices that the strange force that has long drained some of his Chakra is stirring for the first time.
Character developments
- Indra is cautious and pragmatic, planning around his lack of talent and the dangers ahead. He uses money and Tsunade’s debts to secure a mentor, and remains attentive to her safety despite their teasing relationship.
- Tsunade is impulsive, deeply in debt, and unwilling to commit to teaching at first, but the offered money overcomes her resistance. Her familiarity with Indra is evident in their casual teasing and physical closeness.
- Uchiha Mikoto is introduced as someone Indra wants included in Tsunade’s training, though she does not appear in the chapter.
Themes and interactions
- Survival and self-preservation: Indra tries to find a path through a future full of wars and danger.
- Resourcefulness and bargaining: Indra turns Tsunade’s debts into leverage for the training arrangement.
- Comic friendship and dependency: Their banter mixes Tsunade’s gambling habits and borrowing with Indra’s dry reminders that she owes him.
- A new mystery: The long-standing Chakra drain may be connected to Indra’s “golden finger,” and its first sign of activity hints at a turning point.
