Background / History

Kushina was brought from the destroyed Land of Whirlpools to Konoha and lived with Mito Uzumaki. Konoha had chosen her to succeed Mito as the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki, but Kushina was initially told that the village was taking in surviving Uzumaki clan members. At the Ninja Academy, classmates mocked her red hair. She declared her ambition to become Konoha’s first female Hokage and was seated near the similarly isolated Chiyu 2 6 8 92.

After Chiyu was hospitalized by his training, Kushina visited him and declared that she would befriend him regardless of others’ opinions. They became close, attending school together and standing up for one another. Mito taught Kushina the Uzumaki Clan’s Sealing Jutsu; after graduation, Kushina remained with her to study before being permitted to take missions within the Land of Fire 8 13 20 24 42.

Three Kumogakure ninja abducted Kushina because of her unusual Chakra. Chiyu followed the guidance of a bell he had given her and rescued her. Later, Kushina used the Mind’s Eye of the Kagura to overhear Chiyu and Mito discussing her intended role as the Nine-Tails’ vessel. She chose to leave Mito’s residence and live with Chiyu 24 42 92.

Chiyu found Miyuki Uzumaki as an alternative vessel. When Kushina learned that Miyuki had been chosen, she felt guilty and apologized, then accepted Miyuki’s assurance that the decision was her own. Miyuki, rather than Kushina, received the Nine-Tails 113 153 154 155 156.

Chiyu later proposed to Kushina, and she accepted. She gave birth to their son, Sōshi Uzumaki. After the Nine-Tails Attack, she was furious to learn that Minato had sealed half of the beast inside Miyuki’s newborn son, Naruto 192 263 270 280. Kushina later arrives at Hidden Sound Village with Chiyu and Sōshi, where she reunites with Miyuki 364.

Sealing Jutsu

• Studied Uzumaki Clan Sealing Jutsu under Mito, initially finding its extensive theory difficult to memorize 20 24.
• Learned enough to begin taking missions and was later assessed as an upper-tier jōnin-level fighter when her Sealing Jutsu was considered alongside her other abilities 42 303.
• Taught Sōshi part of her Sealing Jutsu. Kakashi also sought Chiyu’s help when he struggled to follow her instruction on the Yin Seal 303 328.

Mind’s Eye of the Kagura

• Can sense others over a distance and conceal her own Chakra. Kushina used it to follow Chiyu’s movements and eavesdrop on his conversation with Mito 92.
