Background

Kakashi was the son of Hatake Sakumo and one of only two remaining members of the Hatake Clan. He entered war at an exceptionally young age, graduating from the Academy at five and becoming a Chunin at six. Sakumo hoped that assignment to a Jonin team would give his prematurely mature son the friends he lacked. 82 94

Chiyu interrupted Kakashi's planned placement under Minato Namikaze and offered to take him as a disciple. Kakashi accepted after witnessing Chiyu's Godspeed, beginning training in Total Concentration Breathing, Thunder Breathing, advanced Lightning Release, and combat perception. 94 95 96

After Sakumo was driven to suicide following public condemnation, Kakashi became disillusioned with Konoha and its rhetoric about the Will of Fire. Personality

Early battlefield service made Kakashi detached, serious, and unusually mature for his age. Following Sakumo's death, he became rigidly devoted to rules and initially viewed comrades as liabilities, believing that Konoha's treatment of his father proved that sacrifice and improvisation would only be punished. 94 116 162

Obito's sacrifice forced Kakashi to confront that outlook. He accepted Obito's eye and resolved to protect Rin at the cost of his own life, though the subsequent losses of Obito and Rin left him prone to despair and violent anger toward betrayal. 168 170
