Background / History
Yu Xiaogang is a descendant of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. During his martial soul awakening, the Holy Dragon phantom that should have formed failed to complete its evolution and degraded into Luo Sanpao. Born with only half a rank of innate soul power, he remained trapped at level 29 for years. His clan regarded him as a disgrace, while the wider soul master world dismissed his martial soul research as the self-consolation of a weak man. 29 30
Rather than abandoning his studies, Xiaogang devoted himself to martial soul theory and developed the Ten Core Competencies. His scholarly persistence eventually distinguished him despite his lack of combat strength. 29
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a lean, scholarly middle-aged man whose composed presentation contrasts with the hardship visible in his features. 31
- Gray robes and meticulously combed hair. 31
- Lean face with the reserved air of a learned man. 31
- Eyes described as spirited and profound, reflecting extensive study. 31
- Appeared roughly ten years younger after breaking through to level 30. 33
Personality
Xiaogang is dedicated, analytical, and resilient. Years of ridicule did not break his commitment to martial soul theory; instead, he continued seeking a path by which knowledge could compensate for weak innate talent. 29 32
He is also principled and fair. At Notting Academy, he rebuked the gatekeeper for rejecting Tang San and Xiao Wu based on their clothing rather than the academy's admission rules. 31 His interest in Tang San initially stems from the boy's extraordinary potential, but he becomes sincerely moved by Tang San's respect and treats the apprenticeship seriously. 31 32

- Had to be recalled after Xiaogang was injured and exhausted during the jackal attack. 29

Story Role / Major Arcs
Rescue in Notting Hunting Forest
While conducting field research, Xiaogang is cornered and severely wounded by a thousand-year Soul-Devouring Jackal. Tang Ling kills the beast with a finger flick, exposes Xiaogang's martial soul history, and accepts his plea to become a registered disciple. 29
Notting Academy and Tang San's Apprenticeship
Xiaogang intervenes when the academy gatekeeper rejects Tang San and Xiao Wu, enforcing the academy's actual work-study admission standards. Drawn to Tang San's twin martial souls, innate potential, and temperament, he accepts Tang San as his disciple. 31
Breakthrough and Soul-Ring Expedition
After consuming the Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma, Xiaogang reaches level 30 and resolves to help Tang San acquire his first soul ring. He teaches Tang San how to judge soul beasts, select suitable ring attributes, and survive the dangers of ring absorption. 33 34
Discovery of the Innate Purple Bamboo
Xiaogang later follows an unusually pure spiritual-energy fluctuation to Tang Ling's courtyard and recognizes that the seemingly ordinary purple bamboo is an extraordinary plant. 40
