Pain could not be precisely described in words.
Even among a group of widely experienced Wizards, even though they were supernatural beings skilled at perceiving the world, some said it involved mental power, others said it acted on the more nebulous realm of the soul, and still others called it a shudder born of life's instincts. It was on an entirely different level from certain similar spells. In its underlying approach and direction of thought, this Land of Pain existed on a different plane from those spells.
Mahama was eager to try. Ruger glanced at him without wanting to spell things out, still remembering the scene of their first meeting.
Big Guy had sat on the ground crying, behaving like a child, completely out of control. That had merely been a trial acting on the mind, one that happened to touch a particular weakness in Big Guy's psyche. There was no guarantee that this so-called Land of Pain did not have a similar aspect.
Although Ruger was confident, that confidence applied to facing the Wizards on this island, to conflicts confined to Wizards. He was still unsure about those strange, peculiar things.
The image of Big Guy's body tearing apart and then abruptly closing again flashed through his mind. That was probably the source of Big Guy's confidence.
To him, it did not look like an ultimate self-healing ability, but rather absolute control over his own flesh.
That included the two occasions when Big Guy had blasted other Wizards apart with glowing fists. The finely controlled way they burst apart was not entirely the result of being smashed by his fists. During the incident on the sea, his fist had not even fully touched its target. In Ruger's view, that too was control over flesh, another application of Flesh Control.
