Background / History

Mahama is introduced as a burly Demon Hunter Wizard operating alongside Ruger under Wizard Zorn. When Zorn orders them to subdue four fifth-level wizard apprentices, Mahama hesitates at first but obeys, separately handling his side of the fight and returning to the high ground before Ruger 355.

At the Chaotic Star Sea, Mahama quickly becomes Ruger's companion. Although they had only met once before, they choose rooms among other Demon Hunter Wizards, explore the city together, and discuss the God of Knowledge and the Three-Flame Divine Palace 357. Mahama shows curiosity toward the supernatural customs of the island, including divine festivals and Jester performances, while sharing Ruger's discomfort with forced supernatural laughter 359.

Mahama's path is strongly shaped by his teacher. He explains spell sequences to Ruger, including their advantages, weaknesses, and legendary examples such as a Holy Tribunal figure who hunts immortal beings 391 392. He also reveals that his teacher prepared a corrected spell sequence for him, showing that Mahama's wizard path was planned with considerable care 391.

For his advancement, Mahama needs a special sublimation environment: a battlefield of demon flesh and blood. Ruger proposes serving under a demon lord in disguise to create or reach such a battlefield, and the two prepare an Abyss expedition with Zorn's help 475 476. In the Abyss, Mahama disguises himself as a powerful mutant demon, plays the role of a mount when necessary, and eventually reaches the Flesh-and-Blood Battlefield for his ritual 479 481 488.

Mahama completes his advancement after a prolonged and difficult transformation while Ruger protects him from enemy interference and the chaos of demon lords. After returning to the Cavern World with a Return Stone, he accepts Ruger's decision to save a two-headed demon without question, showing their strengthened trust 525 529.

After advancing, Mahama joins Ruger and Kurt on a voyage through the Chaotic Star Sea. He demonstrates greater confidence and power, seeks Kurt's guidance, defeats sea creatures, buys unusual items, and later reveals that he is also a supernatural knight because of his family's harsh traditions 539 542 546 549.

Appearance

Mahama is repeatedly described as large, burly, and physically imposing. His size draws attention even among wizards, and Jillian and her apprentice regard him as a formidable figure 415.

  • Taller than Ruger and physically massive 355.
  • Often called a “big fellow” or “big brute” in Ruger's narration 414 458.
  • Can become even larger through combat use of the Demon Skin Spell, at one point appearing like a little giant 458.
  • In Abyss disguise, has thick skin on his back and joints, a pure demonic aura, and a body reinforced with Demon Skin Spell materials like armor 479.
  • After advancement, still gives Ruger a “formidable impression” 534.
  • Can take on a gigantic sea-monster-like form during combat at sea 548.

Personality

Mahama is proud without being arrogant. Ruger observes that his pride comes from confidence, and that Mahama becomes talkative when discussing spells, battles, and the deeds of great wizards with someone he considers worthy of equal conversation 393.

He is cautious and disciplined in dangerous situations. When Jillian lunges at Ruger under a curse, Mahama senses her spiritual force and stays hidden rather than interfere blindly, trusting Ruger while remaining ready to help 403. In the Abyss, he carefully maintains his demon disguise even when claimed as a mount by an old demon 481 485.

Mahama is also capable of gratitude and loyalty. After Ruger supports him through the Abyss expedition and advancement, Mahama buys Ruger a boat as thanks 547. Ruger later trusts him enough to leave Zorn's situation in his hands while taking a rest 532.

Despite his steadiness, Mahama enjoys combat. After advancing, he becomes eager for fights, attacks pursuers at sea, and destroys a modified sea-beast vessel 548.

Abilities & Skills

Demon Skin Spell

Mahama's signature combat method is the Demon Skin Spell. Ruger suspects it may be his fixed spell after seeing him manipulate two layers at once, using one spell to drive two different demon-skin materials with different effects 374.

  • Can reinforce his body for direct fist combat 374.
  • Controls layered demon skins with exceptional precision 374.
  • Later uses numerous Demon Skin Spell materials over his body, shifting different skins to intercept different enemy spells 458.
  • Can enlarge his body into a giant-like combat form 458.
  • His Abyss disguise is built around thick, practical demon skin suitable for battle 479.

Physical Combat

Mahama favors close combat and is repeatedly shown fighting with his body rather than relying only on conventional spellcasting.

  • Trades blows with Ruger in a friendly duel using Demon Skin Spell 374.
  • Handles beasts and strange people with ease during Isaac's demon-hunting incident 418.
  • Deals with enemies while Ruger analyzes the battlefield 491.
  • Defeats an aquatic draconic beast during the voyage with Kurt and Ruger 542.
  • Battles and defeats three wizards while secretly following a small boat 549.

Abyss Infiltration

Mahama helps Ruger infiltrate the Abyss by disguising himself as a demon and adapting to demon hierarchy.

  • Communicates and cooperates with Ruger while both are disguised as demons 479.
  • Maintains safe distance from Ruger due to Ruger's Demon of Miserliness aura without disrupting cooperation 479.
  • Accepts being treated as a mount to preserve the disguise under the old demon's dominance 481 485.
  • Continues toward the Flesh-and-Blood Battlefield despite danger, focused on his advancement 510.

Spell Sequence Knowledge

Mahama has deeper knowledge of structured wizard paths than Ruger when they first discuss spell sequences.

  • Explains that his teacher planned a corrected spell sequence for him 391.
  • Describes the strengths and vulnerabilities of spell sequences 391 392.
  • Shares legends of a Holy Tribunal figure whose sequence specializes in killing immortal beings 392.
  • Discusses Beast King Wizards and magical-pet spell sequences when Ruger asks about Zorn 393.

Supernatural Knighthood

Mahama is also a supernatural knight, a status tied to his family's rules rather than his wizard teacher's requirements.

  • Confirms his knight status to Kurt 549.
  • Explains that every member of his family must become a knight, regardless of gender, illness, wizard talent, or knight aptitude 549.
  • Says those unable to become knights even after forced potion use are executed 549.
