Background / History
The Swarm began with the birth of the first Larva in a primordial Spawning Pool. Scattered organisms gathered through parasitism, devouring, and slaughter until their minds formed the first Overmind and an ordered collective consciousness: the Hive Mind. The last previous Overmind ultimately shattered the barrier between worlds and found the current Overmind in another universe. 2 4
When the current Overmind awakened, the Swarm had been reduced to Agatha, a severely damaged Queen. By connecting to its stored genetic records and collective will, he became part of its history and gained authority over its units, genes, and Hive Mind. 1 4
The first Creep was awakened from a tissue sample, providing the basis for the Swarm's recovery. It consumed organic matter, infected local life, and spread beneath the forest while Agatha merged her nerves with it to help manage the expanding territory. 4 5
Appearance
The Swarm has no single fixed body. It manifests through interconnected Zerg organisms, living structures, neural tissue, and Creep directed by the Hive Mind.
- Creep — dark-brown to nearly black viscous biomass that spreads across and beneath terrain, consumes organic material, and can photosynthesize. 4 5
- Hive Mind — a collective consciousness containing the knowledge and experiences of existing and former Zerg units. 4
- Living structures — organs such as Hatcheries, Spawning Pools, Evolution Chambers, Venom Devourers, and Extractors serve as the Swarm's production, research, command, and resource systems. 13 25 31 43
- Interchangeable biology — most units show little rejection toward one another and can be grafted or recycled when necessary. 5
Abilities & Skills
Hive Mind
The Swarm's collective consciousness gathers the thoughts of Zerg units, refines Psionic Energy, stores knowledge, and enables the Overmind to command or possess connected organisms. 3 4
- Allows the Overmind to experience a unit's senses and temporarily control its body. 2 4 26
- Stores the consciousness and accumulated experience of Swarm units; Agatha can be restored after death so long as her Hive Mind backup remains intact. 4 18
- Connected Zerg units receive Psionic Energy from the Hive Mind rather than refining it independently. 3
- Units cannot normally exceed the Overmind's Psionic Energy level. 3
- Individuals with powerful souls or self-will can resist assimilation or pose a danger if drawn into the Hive Mind. 18 29
Assimilation and Viral Infection
The Hyper-Evolutionary Virus inserts Zerg genes into a host's DNA, allowing the Swarm to infect, modify, and eventually incorporate local species. 6
- Infection from the fertilized-egg stage produces more stable and deeply Zergified organisms than infection of mature hosts. 6
- Infected organisms can gradually develop specialized viruses and eventually become units hatchable from Hatchery Larvae. 6
- The Swarm can bypass infection by directly forcing a target's mind into the Hive Mind with Psionic Energy, though such links require continued attention without physical modification. 12
- Species with sufficiently homogeneous genetics can be infected rapidly with tailored viruses, as demonstrated against the spider colony. 41
Genetic Evolution
The Swarm can alter genes, combine traits from assimilated organisms, and develop specialized units or organs through the Overmind's authority and Evolution Chambers. 3 31
- The Overmind's induction glands can activate or deactivate segments of the Swarm's genes, though producing a complete unit directly requires immense genetic complexity and resources. 3
- Evolution Chambers test and unlock traits before they are incorporated into structures and standardized units. 31
- Individual units can sometimes absorb external genes and evolve immediately, as the Dragon Dog did after consuming a White-Striped Spider. 31 35
- Elite units are more compatible with the Hive Mind and can bear greater Psionic Energy; the Swarm can potentially mass-produce them with Void-energy-containing catalysts. 32
Creep and Environmental Conversion
Creep is the Swarm's living territorial foundation, able to consume material, create biomass, support structures, and reshape ecosystems. 4 5
- Spreads aboveground and underground, with Creep Tumors and additional seeding points accelerating expansion. 4 6
- Converts terrain into Swarm territory, supports Zerg structures, and improves recovery and efficiency when empowered by compatible life-force organisms. 9 21
- Can produce or support sensory organs, command nodes, pheromone nodes, and scouting systems. 39 41 48
- Isolated Creep patches can be deployed by modified Overlords to stockpile organic matter and search for entrances to the Great Labyrinth. 48
Biological Production
The Swarm produces units and structures through specialized living organs rather than conventional industry.
- Hatchery — activates the Swarm's genetic capacity, hatches units, and serves as a major neural hub. 25 26
- Drone Nest and Drones — enabled the first direct production of Drones; only some early mutated Drones retained the ability to become structures. 24
- Spawning Pool — transforms and incubates units, including Zerglings and modified organisms such as Agatha and the Dragon Lion. 31 32
- Venom Devourer — produces spore slurry, modifies viruses, creates Mutated Combat Forms, and coordinates surrounding Creep as a command center. 13
- Twisted Node — converts Many-Legged Monsters into high-output organic-matter sources. A single node can produce as much organic matter as baseline Creep across ten Dragon Lion Territories. 43
- Swarm Heart — a transformed Venom Devourer and Heart Tree that gathers and shares life force with connected Zerg structures and units. 44
Adaptation and Resource Use
The Swarm does not primarily lack energy; its greatest constraints are raw materials and production capacity. Organic matter is its preferred construction resource because it can be converted directly into Zerg bodies. 43
- Can recycle damaged low-level units through Creep, while preserving nutrients for high-level units pending recovery. 5
- Can extract usable biological elements from vegetation, flesh, blood, minerals, water, and even rock, though inorganic conversion is inefficient. 43
- Captures valuable organisms alive when their reproduction, memories, genes, or physical traits have greater strategic value than their essence alone. 43 45 49
Relationships
- The Overmind — supreme controller and physical vessel of the Hive Mind; directs the Swarm's expansion, evolution, production, and strategy. 3 4
- Agatha — former Guardian Queen and the Overmind's primary advisor, defender, Creep manager, and psionic analyst. 5 18 47
- Elar — captured elf retained as an advisor because the Swarm cannot easily reproduce elven thought patterns from memories alone. 29 46
- Spider Matriarch — captured epic creature intended for conversion into a living production structure for aberrant combat organisms and modified spider units. 43
- Dragon Dog — elite Zergling evolved with Dragon Lion traits and a soul; serves as a valuable frontline combat organism. 34 35
- Handsome Ball — Queen healed and modified with elven genes, gaining improved spatial awareness and a distinct appearance. 44
Story Role / Major Arcs
Initial Recovery
With only Agatha remaining, the Swarm establishes its first Creep, infects nearby creatures, modifies bird eggs into scouts, and begins building a mobile force rather than spreading blindly. 4 5 6
Forest Expansion
The Swarm assimilates the Monster Tree, establishes new territory in Dragon Lion Forest, creates Venom Devourers and Drones, and completes its first Hatchery. 9 13 21 24 25
Zerg Infrastructure and Elven Conflict
After discovering the elves through the memories of assimilated creatures, the Swarm constructs a Spawning Pool and Evolution Chamber, breeds thousands of Zerglings, and prepares hidden secondary bases between elven territories. 21 31 32
Great Labyrinth Campaign
The Swarm enters the spider caverns, adapts to Shadow Walk and spider silk, infects the spider colony, captures the Spider Matriarch, and establishes underground Hatcheries and production facilities. 35 40 41 43
Underground Expansion
The Swarm targets the Great Labyrinth and deeper underground world for new biological samples, resources, and cave-elf intelligence. It deploys Spore Crawlers, absorbs the territories of Carnivorous Bees, naked mole rats, and Moonwing Beasts, and begins seeking a way to exploit the Flesh Abyss as an immense Twisted Node. 46 47 49 50
Trivia
- The Swarm is not purely based on the Zerg; it incorporates elements from other alien insect species and modified fan-created settings. The Hive Mind was inspired by the Tyranids setting. 3
- The Hive Mind is described as the Overmind's true body, while the physical body that acts in the world is only a vessel. 29
- The Swarm's ordinary units are genetically locked against developing independent self-awareness; creating self-willed units is a sign of a sufficiently powerful Overmind. 44
