Background / History
During the previous Swarm's expansion era, Creep was given broad authority to terraform undefended planets. A Creep-wrapped cyst could be deployed onto a world, spread until it covered the planet, and naturally develop Hatcheries; virus-mutated humans could also extend Creep and cause a planet's collapse into a Swarm-controlled biomass ocean, though such virus-born swarms had limited potential 3.
The current Creep begins when the Overmind modifies a tissue sample taken from Agatha's scar tissue. The initial drop consumes grass, corrects its own gene chains, and rapidly expands through the forest by converting vegetation into new tissue 4. It becomes the foundation of the Overmind's first territory, producing defensive terrain, incubating modified bird eggs, supporting infected animals, and spreading beneath the surface through insect-assisted excavation 5 6.
As its territory grows, Creep becomes increasingly integrated with Swarm infrastructure. Agatha merges her nerves with it to act as a regional management node, later assisted by Creep Tumors and Venom Devourers that coordinate distant zones, infection, and spore distribution 5 13 18. It subsequently supports the Swarm's surface expansion, occupation of the Dragon Lion Territory, underground campaign against the spider colony, and the Forest Bald Spot project 19 31 41 48.
Appearance
Creep is a dark-brown to blackish-purple fungal-organic mass composed of mycelium, hyphae, and adaptable tissue. Its surface can resemble a dense, elastic running track, while its interior contains a honeycomb-like structure that allows extreme changes in rigidity and texture 1 5 27.
- It can become firm like rigid plastic, slick like ice, adhesive like glue, or loose and porous like an incubator 5 6.
- Its mycelium can rise into ordered rows, draw together like muscle fibers, or grow into tentacles, shells, keratin layers, and chitinous armor 5 8 17.
- Creep Tumors appear as pulsing tumor-like neural organs; Agatha's hatched elite tumors are smooth, irregular masses roughly the size of a van 13 43.
- Its surface may form structures resembling fungal filaments, sensory growths, nodes, traps, or web-like membranes 15 27 41 45.
Abilities & Skills
Biomass Conversion and Expansion
Creep consumes and breaks down organic matter, converting it into additional Creep tissue and resources usable by the Swarm. Most Zerg depend on it to convert inorganic substances into organic matter for survival 3 4.
- Grass shrivels and decays on contact; trees can be corroded internally through their conducting tissue and collapse within hours 4.
- It can photosynthesize at an efficiency greater than ordinary green plants and absorb nearly every wavelength of light 4.
- Early in its activation, it spreads at nearly one meter per minute; later it reaches 80 square kilometers of coverage within a week 4 13.
- Creep spores carried by Venom Devourer slurry can multiply tissue dozens or hundreds of times in volume almost instantly 17.
- High-grade Creep is stated to be capable of infecting an entire planet within days 4.
Morphological Differentiation
Under Psionic Energy direction, Creep can reorganize its tissue into specialized biological and structural forms 5.
- It can differentiate into neural tissue, muscle-like fibers, shells, keratin, armor plating, spikes, transport tissue, and secretory organs 5 8 23 40.
- It forms incubators for infected eggs, cocoon-like wrapping structures, tunnels, emergency passages, pit traps, and protective membranes 6 9 19 45.
- It can become soft and resilient enough to catch the Overmind like a spring mattress, or tough enough to anchor him against a powerful Root Vine Monster 8.
- Its undifferentiated state has no brain and cannot process overly complex instructions without management nodes or Agatha's intervention 5 9.
Infection and Assimilation
Creep lives in close symbiosis with the Zerg Hyper-Evolution Virus, also called the Venom Devourer Virus. The virus inserts Zerg DNA into infected organisms, while Creep supplies tissue, nutrients, and physical control 5 6.
- Mycelium can pierce a host's body, spread through its muscles, digest much of its tissue, and leave it transformed into a Zerg-controlled unit 5.
- Creep-assisted infection is more stable when begun at the fertilized-egg stage, allowing the Creep to dominate development from the beginning 6.
- It can keep heavily modified building units alive by supplying nutrients directly to every cell through mycelia 12.
- Natural transmission of the unmodified virus is limited; widespread atmospheric infection requires specialized spore-producing organs or infectious units 5.
- It can recycle severely injured low-level Swarm units into nutrients, while higher-level units are preserved for later recovery 5.
Neural Network and Psionic Support
Creep functions as a distributed substrate for the Hive Mind, transmitting commands and sensory information through specialized tissue 13 15.
- Agatha's nervous system improves substantially after becoming the Creep's central node, allowing her to coordinate regional Creep activity and information transfer 5 18.
- Creep Tumors contain neural tissue that manages local territory; elite tumors can consume Psionic Energy and increase nearby Creep activity 13 43.
- The Overmind develops basic sensory organs for Creep and deploys monitoring nodes to cover cavern blind spots and detect dimensional threats 15 39.
- Venom Devourers can serve as temporary information-processing centers for distant Creep regions 38.
Defensive and Combat Functions
Though primarily a substrate and infrastructure organism, Creep can restrain, corrode, misdirect, and suppress enemies 7 8.
- It binds Root Vine Monsters in layers of tissue, overwhelms their regeneration through continuous corrosion, and digests their remains 7 8.
- It can thicken into skin and bone armor, constraining a level-seven Many-Legged Monster immediately upon its birth 43.
- When small spiders countered it with digestive fluid, physical tearing, and web repair, it developed armor and spikes tailored to hinder them 40.
- It produces pheromone nodes that imitate a Lesser Spider Matriarch's signals, causing enemy spiders to protect Creep nodes and allowing expansion through their web system 41.
- Powerful Psionic Energy entities can temporarily repel or kill Creep tissue, as demonstrated by the humanoid Root Vine Monster's yellow-green energy 8.
Relationships
- The Overmind — Creator and primary controller of the current Creep. He directs its genetic changes, expansion, structures, infection priorities, and remote deployment 4 5 48.
- Agatha — Merges her nerves with Creep as a central management node; later develops Creep Tumors and can hatch elite psionically empowered tumors 5 18 43.
- Venom Devourers — Creep-derived or Drone-mutated structures that launch nutrient-rich spore slurry, coordinate infection, and can operate as regional processing centers 13 17 38.
- Creep Tumors — Specialized neural and secretory nodes that help direct territory, process sensory input, and strengthen surrounding Creep 9 13 43.
- Overlords — Modified to control isolated Creep zones through direct neural connections, preventing remote patches from expanding beyond the Overmind's plans 48.
- Root Vine Monsters — Hostile plant-and-Psionic entities spawned from roots beneath Creep; most are eventually restrained, corroded, and absorbed 7 8.
- Spider colony — Its small spiders temporarily halt Creep's advance through coordinated digestion, tearing, and web repair before Creep adapts with pheromone control 40 41.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Founding of the First Territory
The Overmind activates Creep from Agatha's scar tissue and uses it as the basis for a defensible forest foothold. It consumes vegetation, produces infected animals, incubates reconnaissance birds, and establishes tunnels and traps 4 6.
Root Vine Monster Attacks
Creep becomes the primary battlefield against Root Vine Monsters spawned from tree roots. It adapts by accelerating nutrient transport, binding the monsters, and growing protective keratin and chitin around critical areas 7 9.
Expansion and Swarm Infrastructure
As Creep reaches 80 square kilometers, it develops Creep Tumors around Agatha and produces a Venom Devourer capable of launching spore slurry over several kilometers 13. It later spreads through the Dragon Lion Territory via Bait Birds and establishes the basis for a new forest-centered Swarm base 19 21.
Spider Cave Campaign
Creep enters the Great Labyrinth through spider caves, where small spider castes halt it using digestive fluid, physical attacks, and silk repair. It counters by adapting armor and spikes, then uses pheromone-producing nodes to seize control of the spiders' behavior and resume expansion 40 41.
Underground Resource Network
Elite Creep Tumors suppress a newly formed Many-Legged Monster and empower dense, Hatchery-grade Creep around the underground corpse pile. The Swarm then shifts its focus to building subterranean infrastructure and extracting resources 43.
Forest Bald Spot Plan
Hundreds of Overlords deploy across the world to seed isolated Creep zones. These outposts are intended to store biomass for later transfer through the Nydus Network and locate entrances to the Great Labyrinth 48.
Trivia
- The Overmind initially describes Creep as strangely refreshing rather than disgusting, despite its viscous and flesh-like appearance 5.
- A hooded elf examines Creep as a fungus-like life-form and considers whether it could help the Mother Tree, provided it is neither distortion nor corruption 27.
- The same elf can run directly across Creep without being slowed, supported, or attacked by it 27.
- The Overmind notes that Creep can seem intelligent in battle, but its undifferentiated state is explicitly unable to understand complex commands 8 5.
