Background / History
Before receiving the diary, Utaha was already a highly regarded student and an aspiring light novelist. Her grades consistently ranked at the top of her class, while her published work, Love Metronome, was beginning its run through autograph sessions and reader feedback. 1 50
A black diary inexplicably appeared on her desk one night. Its pages seemed endless, its entry was written in elegant English, and it claimed to be the diary of “Tom Marvolo Riddle.” Although initially skeptical, Utaha became unable to dismiss its knowledge of supernatural events and the futures of people around her. She began investigating Hoshino Ai and joined the other diary holders in searching for the writer, “You Know Who.” 1 14
The diary also exposed her original future: she would become deeply invested in Aki Tomoya and ultimately lose in a romantic rivalry. Rather than accepting that outcome, Utaha resolved to keep Aki as a reader and professional acquaintance while changing both her future and the direction of Love Metronome. 36 50
Appearance
Utaha is described as an exceptionally beautiful girl with an impressive figure. At school, her composed and aloof image earns her the reputation of a “flower on a high mountain.” 1 20
- Her beauty draws widespread attention when she appears as a second-year student representative. 20
- Her casual behavior at home sharply contrasts with her refined school image; she is first shown sprawled across her bed in loose pajamas while reading the diary. 1
- She is recognizable to other diary holders on sight, having not altered her appearance for their first offline gathering. 29
Personality
Utaha is confident in her intellect, writing ability, and social judgment. She can be sharp-tongued and domineering in conversation, particularly when dealing with Eriri Spencer Sawamura, whose tsundere reactions Utaha finds easy to provoke. 23 24 Her confidence does not prevent her from recognizing talent in others; she quickly identifies Eriri’s potential as an illustrator and Shiina Mashiro’s potential as a manga artist. 25 54
She is intensely curious and proactive. Once the diary establishes that the world contains vengeful spirits, gods, alternate worlds, and supernatural organizations, Utaha repeatedly pushes the group to investigate rather than merely speculate. 30 40 Her search for “You Know Who” becomes especially obsessive after she realizes that abandoning it would leave the diary writer hidden and unchallenged. 72
Utaha’s composure can conceal strong possessive and emotionally volatile impulses. She briefly enters a yandere-like state while imagining Katsura Kotonoha’s possible actions, and her growing attachment to Miyauchi Hiyage later manifests in the illusions of the Temporary Palace. 17 211 212 She is conscious of the danger of repeating the romantic behavior described in her original story and resists making reckless advances. 158
Away from school, Utaha is openly otaku-minded and spends much of her extra waking time online, reading, chatting, and consuming fiction. Ripple Chi Kung reduces her required sleep to under five hours, giving her even more time for these habits. 181
Abilities & Skills
Light Novel Writing
Utaha is the author of Love Metronome and draws inspiration from the diary holders’ backgrounds, personalities, and conflicts.

- Recognizes that she writes love triangles more naturally than uncomplicated romance. 158
- Incorporates Miyauchi Hiyage’s advice to make her characters—including her formerly underdeveloped male protagonist—more rounded and compelling. 158
- Begins unconsciously modeling Love Metronome’s male protagonist on Miyauchi Hiyage. 211
Ripple Chi Kung
Utaha uses Ripple Chi Kung to manage her emotions and enhance her physical condition.
- Calms herself after emotionally intense reactions to diary entries. 18
- Functions with significantly less sleep while remaining mentally alert. 184
- Gains strength through Reading Point commissions tied to seeking Miyauchi Hiyage’s assistance. 90
Water Affinity
Utaha’s Water Affinity is a reward identified as possessing divinity.
- Can summon water sources without needing a preexisting supply. 206
- Forms water walls to protect herself and allies during combat. 209
- Has not yet developed the ability beyond basic defensive use and simple attacks. 209
- Intends to use Miyauchi Hiyage’s help to further develop the affinity. 229
Investigation and Deduction
Utaha consistently acts as one of the diary holders’ most active investigators.
- Works with Eriri to examine school surveillance footage for the mysterious diary writer. 25
- Correctly treats Haruhi Suzumiya as a potential diary holder and dangerous supernatural anomaly. 158 159
- Questions Tonio about the origin of his unusual abilities during the Morioh trip. 234
- Analyzes Shadow Chizuru’s sudden hostility and the implications of the Mirror Theater’s illusions. 209
Equipment / Items
- Black Diary — An apparently ordinary but indestructible diary with endless pages. It first appears on Utaha’s desk and exposes hidden histories, future events, and supernatural information. 1 18
- Diary-holder group chat — A communication channel shared with other holders; “You Know Who” can enter it freely, seize group-owner permissions, and mute all members. 18
Relationships
- Miyauchi Hiyage / “You Know Who” — Initially the target of Utaha’s investigation and resentment. Her commissions eventually require his help, and his writing advice turns them into close friends, though she remains conflicted over Shiina Mashiro’s place in his life. 72 90 158 211
- Shiina Mashiro — A fellow diary holder, talented manga artist, and both creative rival and potential collaborator. Utaha recognizes Mashiro’s ability but becomes frustrated by Mashiro’s reliance on Hiyage. 54 77 90
- Eriri Spencer Sawamura — A schoolmate and illustrator whose tsundere personality Utaha easily provokes. Despite their clashes, Utaha considers recruiting Eriri to illustrate a future novel and partners with her in investigations. 23 25
- Shinomiya Kaguya — Fellow diary holder and frequent ally in group discussions, supernatural incidents, and the Temporary Palace expedition. Both reject the romantic futures revealed by the diary. 30 210
- Aki Tomoya — Utaha’s first major reader and the original story’s intended romantic lead. After learning her future, she chooses to maintain a friendly author-reader relationship rather than pursue him romantically. 50
- Haruhi Suzumiya — A transfer student whom Utaha regards as dangerously abnormal after recognizing her name in the diary. The two spend an extended period probing and investigating one another. 158 159 241
Story Role / Major Arcs
Diary Reception and the Search for “You Know Who”
Utaha becomes one of the first heroines to receive the diary and helps form the group determined to identify its owner. She joins offline meetings, pushes the others to restore Shinomiya Kaguya’s consciousness, and remains convinced that the writer is observing their every move. 1 30
Creative Partnerships and Manga Adaptation
After discovering Eriri’s illustration skill, Utaha considers recruiting her for future work. Shiina Mashiro’s plan to adapt Utaha’s story into manga surprises her, particularly when Mashiro rapidly obtains the other protagonists’ consent and transfers into her school to pursue the project. 25 54 60
Reading Point Commissions
To continue searching for “You Know Who,” Utaha begins taking commissions for Reading Points. Her commission becomes linked to receiving help from Miyauchi Hiyage, leading her to consult him constantly for writing advice and to monitor other girls who may compete for his attention. 72 90 109
Haruhi Suzumiya Investigation
After Hiyage warns her about a newly transferred Haruhi Suzumiya, Utaha searches the diary and realizes Haruhi possesses world-rewriting divine power. She recruits Eriri to help approach Haruhi, while Haruhi simultaneously investigates Utaha’s connection to Hiyage and the diary holders. 158 159 160
Temporary Palace and Shadow Chizuru
Utaha joins the exploration of the Impression Space’s Temporary Palace alongside Katsura Kotonoha, Sudo Ayami, and Chizuru Ichinose. She deploys water barriers against Hassan clones, then enters personal mirror illusions in hopes of awakening a Persona. Her illusion repeatedly places Hiyage in the role of Love Metronome’s protagonist and Mashiro as the rival who takes him away. 205 209 211
Morioh Trip
Utaha travels to Morioh with Hiyage, the Shiina sisters, Kaguya’s circle, and other diary holders. During the visit, she is among the first to sense the supernatural quality of Tonio’s cooking and questions him about how he acquired his abilities. 230 233 234
