"Perpetuity?"
The successors who were producing usable wormholes noticed Perpetuity's arrival.
Perpetuity replied, "I was curious about how wormhole communication is made, so I came to take a look."
"While I'm here, I'd also like you to explain the principles behind wormhole communication."
"No problem."
In the void hung an enormous gravity ring, guarded by several fully armed faster-than-light organisms.
This massive gravity ring was the tool the successors used to produce usable wormholes. It extracted large quantities of negative mass from the energy layer, then guided it to converge at the center.
As they created a usable wormhole, the successors explained it to Perpetuity.
"Wormholes do not need to be created. Spacetime naturally generates wormholes every moment, but they are all extremely small—many times smaller than quarks—and they do not last long. They collapse the instant they form, so they are difficult to affect the macroscopic world."
"However, a negative-mass spacetime field can prevent a wormhole from collapsing. That provides the foundation for creating usable wormholes."
As the successors spoke, a wormhole took shape at the center of the ring. It was tiny, only one-thousandth the volume of a human fingernail, invisible to the naked human eye.
...Of course, it was only invisible to human eyes. The successors were not human.
A wormhole connecting two locations inevitably emitted infrared microwaves. This was not radiation emitted by the wormhole itself, but cosmic microwave background radiation from the universe on the other end of its connection. The cosmic microwave background varied between regions, and by observing the infrared microwaves, the successors could easily detect the wormhole.
Ten seconds after the wormhole formed, the successors deliberately injected positive mass and destroyed it.
Perpetuity found this puzzling and asked about it. The successors answered.
"Not every wormhole expanded and maintained by negative mass
