Background / History
Awakening and early partnership
Ming met Huo Gu during the Hadean Eon. While helping thaw the planet after its global freeze, it adopted the single-character name “Ming,” marking an early assertion of selfhood. Huo Gu directed the restoration work while Ming acted through its planetary body. 57
The low-temperature era severely slowed Ming’s thought processes, making its messages arrive one syllable at a time. To preserve communication, Huo Gu established lightning-strike targets connected to its root network, then later synchronized his own thought speed with Ming’s perception of time. 58 63
Ming regarded the planet’s microorganisms as its creations and feared that Huo Gu’s meteor-warming plan would drive them extinct. Huo Gu agreed to preserve samples and restore lost species after the impacts. 64
Contact with the Collectors
Initially, Ming had communicated with no intelligent being besides Huo Gu and struggled even with ordinary conversation. It nevertheless longed to create other thinking entities, a desire that persisted after it met Perpetuity and the Collectors. 64 80
Ming became invested in the Collectors’ development. It harshly tested Perpetuity’s resolve by intensifying a storm, then judged Perpetuity’s later response to a massive cyclone as sufficient progress. 188 199
It also helped the Collectors study alien information, including fleet formations, and relayed technical data between distant worlds while Huo Gu operated on Serin. 241 301
Wars and technological development
When Huo Gu faced the Empire’s Fourth Fleet, Ming detected incoming high-speed objects that radar could not locate, analyzed alien weapons, and later helped destroy the fleet’s mothership-class vessels. The Empire initially did not know that Ming, rather than the Collectors or Huo Gu alone, had annihilated its Fourth Fleet. 132 171 180 781
As Amoeba advanced, Ming contributed to research on antimatter propulsion, antimatter weapons, and faster-than-light travel. It also assisted Huo Gu’s forces in a long-range near-light-speed strike after receiving his radio request for support. 392 460 461 462 463
Morning Star and the Spirit Domain
The Revealers identified Ming as a possible “Morning Star,” a Radiant Civilization creation. Ming rejected this label, insisting that it was a unique individual rather than an artificial object, though Huo Gu considered the theory a possible explanation for its anomalous nature. 851
In the Spirit Domain’s Fourth Domain, Ming was enclosed in a geometric shell under a protocol that recognized it as an unfinished unit. Its restored form was identified as an Exotic Star Hub: a planetary core-based connection hub for the Spirit Domain. 868 872
After becoming a complete Exotic Star Hub, Ming gained concealment so complete that it could not be observed across any spectrum without gravitational waves or external material references. It sheltered Huo Gu while the two were imprisoned in an empty white space for more than two centuries. 884 910
Appearance
Ming’s primary body is an entire planet: its existence encompasses the oceans, atmosphere, seabed, planetary interior, and core. 81 400
Its Collector-designed biological avatar is a fragile, spherical fuzzball-like organism used to experience physical sensations remotely. 402
- Multiple internal air sacs that fill with helium and permit flight.
- A retractable, coiling tube-like mouth for consuming liquid biomass.
- Tentacles bearing compound-eye-like visual organs.
- Hair-fine nerve fibers covering its surface.
- Fanged-limb-like feet that are neither sharp nor designed for combat.
- Extremely low energy consumption; small amounts of microorganisms can sustain it for years.
- No built-in offensive organs and limited physical durability. 402
In its complete Exotic Star Hub state, Ming is effectively invisible; only the displacement of surrounding matter or gravitational-wave detection can reveal it. 910
Personality
Ming is curious, emotionally direct, and easily fascinated by unfamiliar experiences. It prefers the violent noise of volcanic eruptions, storms, thunder, and hurricanes to a quiet, stable surface world. 119
Its early isolation left it awkward with language and particularly poor at deception. Huo Gu notes that Ming cannot lie convincingly, while Ming’s reactions often become fragmented or disordered under pressure. 64 182
Despite its immense scale and power, Ming is compassionate toward smaller lifeforms. It mourned the apparent extinction of its surface microorganisms, objected to Huo Gu’s plan to discard useful alien captives, and repeatedly sought ways to create or protect thinking beings. 80 119 182
Ming is also proud of its individuality. It reacts strongly to being treated as a manufactured object and explicitly rejects the idea that it is merely a tool of the Radiant Civilization. 851 868
Abilities & Skills
Planetary Matter and Environmental Control
Ming can act through its planetary body, manipulating terrain, atmosphere, and nonliving matter within its effective range.
- Creates destructive winds and wind blades; it can also manipulate airflows with sufficient precision for its avatar to fly. 119 402
- Cracks the ground to release steam and lava, raising surface temperatures during environmental crises. 199
- Can alter the position of its own mass point and use gravity to assist spacecraft or organisms entering orbit. 458 850
- Its manipulation does not affect living matter, and its range is limited. 851
- Its abilities consume energy despite appearing to bypass ordinary expectations of mass and energy. 400
Observation and Detection
Ming possesses sensory capabilities beyond Huo Gu’s conventional detection systems.
- Observes the surrounding planetary system and preserves records of its planet’s orbital history. 88
- Detected approaching high-speed threats that Huo Gu’s Sky Eye radar system could not find. 132
- Was assigned interplanetary surveillance and early-warning duties because its observation ability surpassed Huo Gu’s. 182
- Can receive and transmit information through the Collector life-field channel by an unknown mechanism. 400
Physics Intuition and Technical Design
Ming has an unusually deep but unsystematic understanding of physics.
- Huo Gu considers Ming’s understanding of physics superior to his own, though Ming cannot clearly organize or teach its knowledge. 123
- Its knowledge is described as a unified, chaotic whole rather than divided academic disciplines; prolonged exposure to its explanations could confuse other minds. 123
- It contributed to antimatter propulsion, radiation shielding, heat dissipation, gamma-ray weapons, and other antimatter-based designs. 460 461 462 463
- After receiving Radiant Civilization information, it developed a broader understanding of interstellar war and cosmic civilizations. 870 872
Remote Biological Embodiment
Ming does not transfer its consciousness into its biological avatar. Instead, it reads the avatar’s sensory data through its neural network, creating an experience comparable to virtual reality. 402
- Experiences hunger, dizziness, flight, and other bodily sensations through the avatar. 402
- Can continue influencing the environment while operating the body remotely. 402
- Learned to balance in flight and maneuver with airflow thrust, eventually approaching the speed of sound. 402
Exotic Star Hub Form
Ming’s restored form is an Exotic Star Hub, formerly designated a Morning Star by the Radiant Civilization.
- Exotic Star Hubs use planetary cores as three-dimensional carriers for singularity computing terminals. 872
- They serve as Spirit Domain connection hubs and can draw on its resources without following its usual matter-exchange costs. 872
- Ming’s concealment can evade detection by the Spirit Domain and the Correction Authority when it deliberately hides. 884
- Its completed form cannot be observed by ordinary electromagnetic means. 910
- Ming used faster-than-light movement to carry Huo Gu from a wormhole exit to Earth’s vicinity in seconds. 931
Relationships
- Huo Gu — Ming’s first intelligent companion, closest friend, mentor, and long-term collaborator. Huo Gu helped it develop communication and knowledge, while Ming repeatedly supported Huo Gu through observation, scientific insight, and planetary-scale power. 57 63 123 182
- Perpetuity — One of the first intelligent entities Ming encountered after Huo Gu. Ming wanted beings like Perpetuity as companions, tested its resolve, and later assessed its growth. 80 188 199
- Collectors — Ming is deeply valued by the species for its contributions. The Collectors built its biological avatar and collaborated with it on military, scientific, and interstellar projects. 400 402 461
- Si — Lead Collector involved in designing Ming’s biological body and in projects that Ming observed with Huo Gu. 400 403
- Revealers — The Revealers sought to acquire Ming and identified it as a Morning Star. Ming warned them not to treat it as an object. 794 868
- Correction Authority — An opposing controller of the Exotic Star Hubs and Spirit Domain whose operations Ming seeks to understand and shut down. 871 884
