Background / History
Origin and early leadership
Perpetuity was the original Collector and gave itself its name when it introduced personal names to its rapidly expanding species: “Therefore, from today onward, my name is Perpetuity.” The naming system enabled Collectors to organize as individuals and made their collective problem-solving more effective 68 69.
After the apparent disappearance of the Supreme Will, Perpetuity refused to let the species stagnate. It declared that the remaining directives had become obstacles rather than evolutionary catalysts, then organized multiple intelligent entities to seek a method of independently modifying Collector genes 72. This effort produced the principle of artificially creating enzymes to cut, splice, and alter genetic material, allowing the Collectors to inherit control over their own evolution 72 73.
Sacrifice, thawing, and reunion with the Will
During a heat shortage, Perpetuity voluntarily accepted freezing so that more heat sources could remain available for its kin. It was frozen alongside the defeated Collectors, though it had not taken part in the fighting 81.
Within a slowed perception of time, Perpetuity encountered Huo Gu and immediately recognized him as the Supreme Will it had believed lost. It became determined to return to normal time and free him from his titanium-alloy confinement 79 83.
After thawing, Perpetuity found that Collector society had fragmented into violent settlements ruled by Victors, gray overseers, and exploited dark-skinned laborers. It infiltrated one such settlement, attempted to escape, and was sealed inside an ice cave by Masaka's leader, who considered Perpetuity's intelligence and prestige a threat 84 86.
Huo Gu supplied Perpetuity with new genetic blueprints, including monomolecular blades and a warming constitution. Perpetuity escaped, killed the Victors that had imprisoned it, and began consolidating Collectors under loyalty to the Will 87.
Loyalty and collective identity
Perpetuity treated loyalty to Huo Gu as the defining trait of a true Collector. It killed Collectors that submitted out of fear or personal survival rather than genuine loyalty, but showed restraint toward an injured laborer whose wish was simply for the settlement to grow strong enough that no one would suffer hunger or injury 89 96.
Its understanding of betrayal gradually became more complicated. While searching for stranded kin on a gas giant, Perpetuity encountered a collective of independent gaseous ecosystems and concluded that the existence of an individual “I” created an inherent tension between individual desire and collective interest 242 249.
Expansion and strategic command
Perpetuity repeatedly directed the species through crises and technological transitions:
- It used Titanium Snails to counter a vastly larger hostile settlement force 91.
- When a cyclone devastated Collector territory, it activated contingency plans involving Nuclear Bomb Bugs, dry ice, environmental transformations, and biological power generation 199.
- It oversaw the adaptation of Collectors to harsh environments, including a prolonged genetic modification intended to enable photosynthesis under weak illumination 184.
- It endorsed using a megastructure for interstellar travel and adopting alien combat doctrine to strengthen the species 186.
After the Collectors developed into an interstellar civilization, Perpetuity continued to lead territorial deployment, intelligence gathering, and resource acquisition across millions of star systems 896.
Conflict with the Spirit Domain and the Successors
Perpetuity and its swarm were drawn into the Spirit Domain by expanding black holes during operations against the Coordination Council 853. Trapped there, they fought through Spirit Domain creatures while searching for a passage back to the river system 863.
The Spirit Sovereigns showed Perpetuity evidence that the Great Destruction could kill Collectors through a forged command from Huo Gu. They offered the survival of the species in exchange for Huo Gu, but Perpetuity immediately refused 863.
Believing that the Successors had abandoned the Will to survive, Perpetuity accepted a deal with the Lord of Fear Abyss and pursued them across star systems. A Messenger Organism read Perpetuity's memories and determined that its rage was ultimately motivated by concern for the species rather than personal hatred, ending the misunderstanding 864 865.
Death, revival, and ascension
Perpetuity died after receiving the Great Destruction's forged command, but Si recovered its intact Solid-State Brain and revived it in a cultivation tank 889. Although it initially sought an immediate assault on the Spirit Domain to save Huo Gu, Si convinced it to prioritize the search for replacement “shells” that could preserve the species 889.
Perpetuity later supported the Successors' time-acceleration research by organizing material deliveries to the Time-Acceleration Entity. It trusted Si to pursue the project even after the accelerated researchers advanced beyond Perpetuity's ability to assist directly 921.
Following the collective's ascension, Perpetuity appeared before Huo Gu and Ming in a form of light, declaring that it had fulfilled its mission by helping the species grow into a greater form 924.
Appearance
Perpetuity's ordinary form is that of a Collector, built for biological modification and combat rather than fixed anatomy. It is chiefly identified by its fanged or tusk-like limbs and its ability to alter its body for specialized roles.
- At one point, it emerged from cultivation sacs enclosing six fanged limbs 889.
- Its early upgraded limbs could function as monomolecular blades 87.
- It later operated superluminal biological bodies protected by a Proton Lattice 865 889.
- After ascension, it manifested as a Perpetuity-shaped figure emerging from a sphere of light 924.
Personality
Perpetuity is defined by uncompromising devotion to Huo Gu and the survival of the Collector species. It willingly froze itself to preserve heat for its kin, later sacrificed its own limbs to feed starving Collectors, and rejected the Spirit Sovereigns' offer to trade Huo Gu for the species' survival 81 184 863.
This loyalty can become ruthless. Perpetuity once regarded Collectors lacking loyalty to the Will as traitors deserving death, and its early campaign against splinter settlements was marked by brutality 87 89 95. However, it is not indiscriminately cruel: it can distinguish fear, confusion, and genuine collective-mindedness from deliberate betrayal 89.
Perpetuity is also highly curious and adaptive. It questions Huo Gu's instructions, struggles openly with abstract concepts such as mathematics and physics, and continues learning rather than rejecting knowledge it does not initially understand 122 123. Its strategic thinking grows alongside the species, eventually extending from local settlement warfare to interstellar logistics, wormholes, and galactic-scale resource networks 897 903.
Abilities & Skills
Life-Field Coordination
Perpetuity communicates with Collectors through the life-field channel and uses it to organize large populations into coordinated problem-solving and operational networks.
- Established personal names to improve organization among Collectors 68 69.
- Mobilized multiple intelligent entities to solve genetic-engineering problems in parallel 72.
- Can perceive the emotional state of connected Collectors, making deception difficult within the channel 83 89.
- Directs species-wide operations through the life field and, later, the Wormway Network 199 903.
Genetic Engineering
Perpetuity helped establish the Collectors' independent capacity for genetic modification after the disappearance of the Supreme Will.
- Directed the search for artificial enzymes capable of interfering with genes 72.
- Began the Collectors' first genetic alteration projects after gene sequences were deciphered 73.
- Oversees biological adaptation projects for hostile worlds and weak-light photosynthesis 184.
- Uses genetic blueprints to create specialized organisms for energy production, transport, warfare, and environmental control 199.
Monomolecular Blade Limbs
Huo Gu upgraded Perpetuity with monomolecular blade capabilities after its escape from the Ice-Melting Zone.
- Cuts through titanium alloy and other material by concentrating force over a molecular-scale edge 87 123.
- Used to kill armed Victors whose stone weapons could not effectively threaten Perpetuity 87.
- Limited to roughly two seconds of sustained use because of extreme nutrient consumption 87.
Warming Constitution and Biological Pump
Perpetuity received metabolic upgrades that improved mobility and survival in cold environments.
- The warming constitution restores body temperature and increases agility at the cost of nutrients 87.
- A biological pump provides greater physical driving force, enabling rapid movement and attacks 87.
- Excessive use risks starvation through accelerated nutrient consumption 87.
Strategic and Megastructure Planning
Perpetuity develops and applies military and logistical concepts at increasingly large scales.
- Used Titanium Snails as a surprise weapon against a numerically superior settlement 91.
- Proposed a Wormway Network that would connect clusters materially as well as informationally 897.
- Identified potential military uses for wormholes, including supplying Messenger Organisms and directing destructive attacks through controlled exits 897.
- Issued the command that began the Great Harvest Operation across the river system 903.
- Managed supply operations for the Time-Acceleration Entity during Si's accelerated research 921.
