Vegeta originally died at the hands of Android 17 and Android 18 four years prior to the main events of the story 16 87. Following his death, he spent years in the Underworld training in a blind rage 87.

When the Underworld collapses—marked by the disappearance of King Yemma, the stop of reincarnation, and the rise of the Shadow Dragons—Chen Mo infiltrates the realm and drags Vegeta's soul back to Kami's Lookout using Seastone ropes 87. Initially furious and bent on destroying Android 18 for killing Goku, Vegeta's hostility softens when he learns that his son Trunks is alive, safe, and strengthened by Chen Mo 87.

He enters a pragmatic alliance with Chen Mo: in exchange for accessing Trunks, training resources, the Tree of Might's fruit, and the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta permits Chen Mo to copy the Saiyan "Stress Feedback" genetic trait 87 88. He subsequently undergoes extreme near-death combat training against the Cell Jrs. in Supreme Kai World to rapidly scale his power 89 90.
