Background

Dr. Gero created Cell as an artificial organism built from the biological traits of several powerful races. His intended evolutionary route required Android 17 and Android 18's Eternal Energy Furnaces, with the two androids designated as optimal absorption targets 52 54.

The Cell active in the story is an alternate-timeline version that arrived by time machine. Its shed skin is discovered in a ruined city, while the Cell native to this timeline remains undeveloped elsewhere 15 21. Cell's first known confrontation with Chen Mo occurs after he captures the injured Android 18; Chen Mo stalls him by bargaining with knowledge of the time machine and Dr. Gero's data 21.

Chen Mo blinds Cell with Solar Flare and escapes with Android 18 before the negotiation can turn fatal 22.

Appearance

Cell's body changes radically through absorption, but his earlier forms retain a distinctly insectoid, bio-engineered appearance.
