Lin Xiaoqian was initially raised primarily by Xu Mengyao and a nanny while Xu Mengyao worked. Her maternal grandparents were abroad for her grandmother's treatment, leaving her lonely when her mother was absent. She longed for a father and was hurt by other children saying she did not have one. 2 3

After Lin Chen begins caring for her, Xiaoqian quickly forms a deep attachment to him. He cooks for her, tells her stories, teaches her writing, languages, painting, and sports, and becomes the stable parental presence she had wanted.
