Background / History
Old Witch Doctor was the eldest of the tribe's three witch doctors. After Blade Tusk passed the aptitude test, he became the boy's principal instructor while the two younger witch doctors handled the tribe's ongoing work. He introduced Blade Tusk to the courtyard archive, where inherited knowledge was preserved in fragile bark books containing pictures of magic beasts, magic cores, herbs, traps, and prey. 3
He taught Blade Tusk that witch doctor magic was useful but dangerous: casting with magic crystals consumed vitality, and generations of witch doctors had died after paying that price. He also explained that witch doctors naturally lived longer than warriors, though their extended lives did not prevent death through overuse of magic. 4
When Blade Tusk proposed replacing bark records with clay tablets, Old Witch Doctor supported the project and used the witch doctors' knowledge of local soils to identify suitable materials. He later participated in the development of Troll writing, grammar, and the expanded clay-tablet archive. 5 7
Initially unable to understand Blade Tusk's new meditation, visualization, and rune-casting theories, Old Witch Doctor nevertheless rejected shame and pushed his younger colleagues to study them seriously. He became the first of the older witch doctors to master the new spellcasting system, helping transform Principles of Spellcraft from Blade Tusk's individual research into a shared body of knowledge. 14 15 16
In his final years, he continued teaching mathematics, advised the tribe on political reform, and officiated Blade Tusk and Meiya's wedding. He died quietly during the ceremony's aftermath, having lived long enough to see the tribe's knowledge and witch doctor ranks greatly expand. 24 32 41
Appearance
Old Witch Doctor was an extremely aged troll whose body had become frail by the end of his life. He relied on a cane and was frequently interrupted by coughing. 24 29 32

Personality
Old Witch Doctor was patient, practical, and deeply committed to preserving knowledge for future generations. Though he recognized the dangers of witch doctor arts, he believed their inheritance could not be abandoned. He took pride in Blade Tusk's intelligence without claiming credit for the changes the apprentice brought to the tribe. 4 16
He was humble about his own limitations, openly admitting when Blade Tusk's theories exceeded his understanding. Rather than allowing that gap to discourage the other witch doctors, he sharply urged them to think and study for themselves. 14
His political outlook was cautious but perceptive. He warned Blade Tusk not to assume all witch doctors would be selfless researchers, arguing that institutions needed to account for ambition rather than ignore it. 32
