Background / History

The Three Pure Ones originally shared Kunlun Mountain. Their cultivation grounds—the Supreme Pure, Jade Pure, and Upper Pure palaces—stood on its main peak. After taking disciples, they established three entrance trials testing an applicant’s Dao-seeking heart, blessings and foundation, and comprehension. They kept Kunlun’s gates open to beings who could pass 14 22 32.

They taught their disciples together, but their approaches differed. Supreme Pure emphasized tranquil non-action and firm foundations; Yuanshi favored order and rigorous instruction; Tongtian sought a path for all beings and taught across a broad range of Daos. Concerned by their disciples’ progress, the three agreed to hold joint Dao expositions every thousand years. Tongtian also lectured his own sect every hundred years 111 112 235.

Conflict between the Sect of Elucidation and Sect of Interception grew over disciples’ conduct and their masters’ differing Daos. Yuanshi later explained that the three Saints had jointly decided to separate: their intermingled Dao resonances were hindering disciples from breaking through beyond the Primordial Unity Golden Immortal realm. Supreme Pure moved to Mount Shouyang, Tongtian established his venue on Golden Turtle Island in the East Sea, and Yuanshi remained at Kunlun. Their separate Saintly auras made the division known throughout the Primordial World 113 237 251.

The separation did not end their cooperation. They descended together when Houtu opened the Underworld, later worked with other Saints to transform Chaos energy into Innate Spiritual Energy, and joined Nuwa in proposing Yellow Dragon as Heavenly Emperor 292 420 432.

Appearance

When the three descend together, their distinct Dao auras and treasures identify them 292:

• Supreme Pure — surrounded by yin-yang energy, with the Mysterious Yellow Exquisite Pagoda overhead and the Supreme Ultimate Diagram forming a golden bridge beneath him.
• Yuanshi — protected by Jade Pure immortal light and carrying the Pangu Banner.
• Tongtian — accompanied by sky-piercing Sword Qi and phantoms of the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords.

Dao instruction

• The three jointly expound the Dao and established regular thousand-year lectures for their disciples 22 111.
• Their specialist legacies are alchemy under Supreme Pure, artifact refinement under Yuanshi, and formations under Tongtian 24.
• Tongtian’s lectures range from swordsmanship and formations to the Five Elements, karma, and destiny 112.

Saintly power and world restoration

• At the edge of the Primordial World, all three transform Chaos energy into Innate Spiritual Energy: Supreme Pure with the Supreme Ultimate Diagram, Yuanshi with the Pangu Banner, and Tongtian with the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation 420.
• Supreme Pure halts renewed fighting between the Witch and Demon Races and warns both against further slaughter before the end of one yuan epoch 302.
• After Mount Buzhou’s collapse, Tongtian retrieves the Mystic Turtle’s four feet, and Yuanshi undertakes their refinement to support the Heavenly Realm 404.

Relationships

• Yellow Dragon — Yuanshi’s direct disciple, whom all three protect during his Zenith Heaven breakthrough. Yuanshi says that, even after their separation, Yellow Dragon remains a disciple of the Three Pure Ones 150 237.
• Xuandu — Supreme Pure’s sole disciple and a successor to the Humanity Sect’s teachings 13 245.
• Jieyin and Zhunti — Western Saints who initially welcome the Three Pure Ones’ separation as an opportunity for their sect, then recognize that distinct lineages may strengthen the eastern disciples 251 252.
• Nuwa — joins them in replenishing the world’s Innate Spiritual Energy and supports their nomination of Yellow Dragon as Heavenly Emperor 420 432.
