Background

Goku lives on Mount Paozu with Chi-Chi and their son, Gohan. Before Raditz’s arrival, he leads a carefree routine of gathering firewood, foraging, and training. Although Gohan warns him of an approaching Saiyan claiming to be his brother, Goku initially treats the warning as an imaginative story and confidently promises that nobody can harm their family while he is present 1.

After discovering that four-year-old Gohan can manipulate ki, Goku eagerly becomes his secret instructor. The pair conceal their martial-arts training from Chi-Chi by claiming to be gathering fruit on the back mountain.
