Background / History

Cell originated as Dr. Gero's hidden Project S-2, a plan to create an ultimate biological weapon by combining genetic material from Saiyans, Namekians, Frieza's race, and other powerful cosmic warriors. His original evolutionary purpose required Androids 17 and 18, whom he regarded as components rather than allies. 29 30 35

He arrived while the Z Fighters were fighting the newly awakened androids. In his First Form, Cell could not match Android 16 or the twin androids in direct combat, so he relied on regeneration, evasive tactics, and absorption. After escaping Vegeta, he absorbed wildlife and later civilians throughout a city, rapidly raising his power through mass murder. 35 37 39

When Cell was unable to absorb Android 17 conventionally, he exploited a remotely triggered self-destruct program inside Android 17's body. Gohan neutralized the program with the Reverse Frequency Device, forcing Cell to retreat into Dr. Gero's laboratory. There, Cell bypassed his intended evolution process by absorbing Android 17 and 18's stored cell samples, as well as evolutionary data from thousands of failed experiments. 41 42 43

Cell's first Perfect Form was vulnerable to a remote controller because it retained incomplete-form cells within his body. He adapted by suppressing their residual consciousnesses, but the strain destabilized the Saiyan-cell membrane protecting the chest core. Android 16 sacrificed himself to expose that core, allowing Gohan to destroy it with a limit-breaking strike. 44 45

Although Cell's body was reduced to ashes, his data survived in hidden facilities. A reassembly process began using backup materials, eventually producing an evolved main-node Cell designed to incorporate the traits of Gohan, Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and other exceptional fighters. 46 48 54

The reconstructed Cell completed his ultimate evolution earlier than expected and fought the Z Fighters on Mount Paozu. He evolved into Super Saiyan 2 using Vegeta's cells and initially defeated their coordinated attempt to destroy his regeneration nodes. Gohan then devised a second assault: Android 17 reflected Cell's own energy into his neural network while the others shattered the nodes and Goku restrained Cell's arms. Unlike a straightforward fighter, Cell prefers traps and psychological pressure. He lured Android 17 into an isolated area, weaponized the android's hidden self-destruct program, and forced Gohan to choose between pursuing him and saving Android 17. 41

His confidence is rooted in adaptability. Cell expects enemies to discover his weaknesses and believes he can overcome them through regeneration, data assimilation, and continued evolution. This certainty begins to collapse when the residual consciousnesses within his own body revolt and when the Z Fighters exploit his distributed core network. 44 45 64
