Background / History

Cell is Dr. Gero's ultimate android, created from combat data collected on Son Goku and programmed to kill him. His body incorporates the cellular characteristics and fighting talent of fighters including Goku, Frieza, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Krillin 32 33.

He emerges during the Android conflict while Vegeta is sparring with Android 17. After blinding Vegeta with Solar Flare, Cell proposes that Vegeta allow him to reach his Perfect Form in exchange for a worthy battle 26 27. Vegeta accepts the proposal and attacks the others, allowing Cell to capture and absorb Android 17 27.

Vegeta eventually overwhelms Second Form Cell with Super Saiyan 2. Driven into desperation, Cell attempts to self-destruct and destroy Earth, but Goku teleports him into deep space before the detonation 30. A surviving core cell regenerates in space; his Piccolo-derived regeneration, Frieza-derived survival in vacuum, and Saiyan near-death boost allow him to evolve directly into Perfect Form 30 31.

After returning to Earth, Cell accepts Senzu Beans from Goku and battles him. A subsequent near-death recovery elevates him into Super Perfect Cell, but Son Gohan ultimately overwhelms him, exploits his cellular traits to empower the Dimensional Seed, forces Android 17 out of him, and destroys Cell with a Kamehameha 31 32 33 34.

A separate Cell appears in the Galaxy Crisis timeline's Cell Games. He battles that timeline's Goku, then faces the visiting Son Gohan. Unable to harm Gohan's Mystic State, Cell self-destructs inside an aura barrier, regenerates, surrenders, and is annihilated when Gohan destroys his life core 49 50 51 52.

Appearance

Cell's appearance changes drastically as he evolves, but each form retains a green, black-spotted bio-organic shell, a crown-like head structure, and a long tail.

He is also arrogant and battle-hungry, seeking “fair” fights even when he has gained an advantage through Goku's Senzu Beans 31. Once overwhelmed, however, his confidence collapses into panic and desperation; he repeatedly turns to self-destruction when ordinary combat can no longer secure victory 30 51.
