Background / History

Cybertron’s Transformers split into the Decepticons and Autobots in a war for control of the planet. By Starscream’s awakening, the Decepticons had won decisive victories, controlled more than half of Cybertron, and had driven the Autobots into their last fortress 3.

Their territorial gains expanded to roughly eighty percent of Cybertron, though they still lacked familiarity with recently captured Autobot-controlled regions and supply facilities 4. Megatron later regarded himself as Cybertron’s ruler, but continued treating Optimus Prime’s remaining forces as an existential threat 13.

During the Autobots’ evacuation, the Decepticons established an aerial blockade, assaulted the final Autobot base, and targeted departing Arks with missiles 16 23. Their numerical and equipment advantages were partly undermined by Starscream, an Autobot infiltrator publicly serving as their second-in-command, who covertly opened escape routes and withdrew air units from the decisive battle 5 18 22.

After the evacuation, Megatron ordered a universe-wide search for Optimus Prime and the escaped Autobots. He also declared that Decepticon commanders could claim conquered territories provided they reported to Cybertron and surrendered energy tribute 14 32.

Organization

Senior commander Shockwave Uses heavy armor, superior alloy equipment, and subterranean ambush tactics 18 19.

Known Members

  • Megatron — Supreme leader; seeks to eliminate the Autobots and expand Decepticon rule across the universe 13 14.
  • Starscream — Publicly the faction’s second-in-command and air commander; actually an Autobot infiltrator known only to select Autobot leaders 4 5 26.
  • Soundwave — Intelligence officer with advanced radar and deployable combat units Ravage and Laserbeak 10 23.
  • Shockwave — Cunning combatant equipped with Type-3 Heavy Armor and Fifth-Generation Alloy 19.
  • Rumble — Low-ranking Decepticon loyal to Starscream and active around frontline operations 3 5.
  • Brawl — Tank Transformer who leads local Decepticon forces 8 11.
  • Thundercracker — Jet Transformer under Starscream; credited with shooting down Autobot scouts during the air blockade 16.
  • Skywarp — Jet Transformer whose reckless pursuit of Autobot survivors is thwarted by Starscream’s disguise 24 25.
  • Sixshot — Elite Decepticon with six transformation modes and prolonged combat endurance 33.
  • Great Dinosaur Saurus — Rising Decepticon leader dissatisfied with Megatron’s fixation on the Autobots; his forces later leave a gap in the defensive perimeter 13 18 22.
  • Trypticon — Assigned to monitor Fortress Maximus but absent when Fortress Maximus reaches the battlefield 10 11.

Military Doctrine and Technology

  • Aerial superiority — The Decepticons’ air force is described as their greatest military advantage. Starscream is tasked with sealing the airspace during the Autobot exodus 14.
  • Superior equipment — Decepticon guards commonly use at least fourth-generation equipment, while elite units may possess Fifth-Generation Alloy and specialized heavy armor 19.
  • Spark modification — Captured Autobots may have their Sparks extracted, memories erased, and bodies converted into Decepticon-controlled warriors 18.
  • Intelligence systems — Spy satellites, advanced radar, and battlefield scanning enable the faction to monitor Autobot movements and detect evacuation attempts 13 23.
  • Decepticon insignia — The faction emblem identifies its members and can trigger reverence among humans on the ancient Earth-like planet visited by Starscream 41.
  • Off-world infrastructure — Ancient Decepticon outposts exist on other planets and can recognize a Decepticon warrior as an authorized user 42 47.

Internal Politics

Megatron’s authority is maintained through military success, personal ambition, and promises of future conquests. His plan allows commanders to keep territories they conquer, so long as they pay energy tribute to Cybertron 14.

Not all Decepticon leaders share Megatron’s hatred of the Autobots. Great Dinosaur Saurus and other rising figures openly grow tired of the war, while Starscream exploits commanders’ fears that Megatron will discard them after the Autobots are destroyed 13 17.

Megatron considers Starscream cowardly and easily controlled, while relying more heavily on Soundwave. This misjudgment allows Starscream to aid the Autobots from within the Decepticon command structure 15 18.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Conquest of Cybertron

The Decepticons dominate the Cybertronian war, seize most of the planet, and reduce the Autobots to a final defensive position 3 4.

Autobot Evacuation

Megatron orders the destruction of the Autobots’ final base and assigns Starscream to enforce an air blockade. The Decepticons launch a mass assault once Fortress Maximus appears to fall, but Starscream covertly directs Autobots toward a gap in their defenses 14 16 22 23.

Universal Expansion

Following the Autobots’ escape, Megatron transforms the campaign into a universe-wide hunt and proposes an expansionist system in which Decepticon commanders conquer and administer new worlds 14 32.

Ancient Outpost on Earth

On an ancient Earth-like planet, Starscream discovers a Decepticon-marked ruin and gains control of an old Decepticon outpost. The local Xiongnu worship the Decepticon symbol and seek ancient Decepticon weapons for their own conquest 41 42 47.

Trivia

  • The Decepticons’ second-in-command, Starscream, is secretly an Autobot infiltrator whose faction insignia can change into an Autobot emblem 5.
  • Decepticon presence on the ancient Earth-like planet predates Starscream’s arrival by at least a thousand years, based on the age of the outpost’s access system 44.
  • The ancient outpost’s original records suggest earlier Decepticons sought energy resources and used local humans in their operations 42.
