Luo Meiyue
Run!
Hong Mo made a move that the others found hard to believe. No matter what, they had never expected Hong Mo, who had been brimming with killing intent just moments ago, to turn around and flee deeper into the passage.
To Hong Mo, running away was nothing shameful. Dealing with the trouble on his body came first. As he passed the doorway, Hong Mo glanced at Zhu Yao's corpse lying off to one side, his eyes still wide open in disbelief.
Damn it, even in death you had to leave me with a huge fucking problem, Hong Mo cursed inwardly. After Instant Activation, he practically flew without his feet touching the ground, charging deeper into the passage. As he ran, he used the Electromagnetic Blade in his hand to cut away the parts of his body tainted by the blue flames.
Waves of gut-wrenching pain hit him, but Hong Mo had no choice. No one knew just how powerful those flames were. If they really were the kind of fire that never went out, he would be completely screwed.
Cutting flesh off his own body might have been an act of self-preservation, but it was not something just anyone could do.
The more ruthless Hong Mo was toward himself, the more frightened the people pursuing him became. If he could be so vicious to himself, what would he do to his enemies? They absolutely could not let Hong Mo put out those flames so easily. With that thought in mind, Han Nian and the other three picked up speed.
After being upset for a while over having her experiment interrupted, Luo Meiyue gradually calmed down. Once she had regained her composure, she thought to ask her father what had caused all this.
At that moment, Luo Bingyi was resting in the monitoring room. Not long ago, Hong Mo had used an electric current to destroy all the surveillance equipment, so he could no longer see the battle between the two sides. He had an increasingly bad feeling about it.
Just then, with a loud bang, a long, slender leg kicked open the tightly shut door. Beneath the raised thigh, a glimpse of black ** could vaguely be seen.
"I'm saying, Meiyue, can't you be a little more ladylike? Poise, poise," Luo Bingyi said, his face dark as he looked at his daughter.
"Poise my ass. I want to know what the hell happened."
"You finally thought to ask me. Not long ago, one of the test subjects woke up." Luo Bingyi covered his forehead helplessly, feeling utterly dejected. How had his daughter developed such a personality? He really was not a good father.
"What's the big deal about a test subject waking up?"
"It's not like that. It wasn't an ordinary awakening. That test subject should previously have been declared dead..." Faced with his daughter's anger, Luo Bingyi could only explain slowly.
A few minutes later, Luo Meiyue finally understood the full course of events. But rather than letting her father off after learning what had happened, she became even angrier.
"Are you a pig? Why did you send the espers from the Special Security Department after him?" It seemed that calling someone a pig was a special family tradition.
"What's wrong?" Luo Bingyi was left at a loss by his daughter's scolding.
"That Hong Mo—is he the test subject sent to the research institute four years ago?"
"Mm, that's right."
"I really don't understand how you could be so stupid as to immediately put him on the enemy side. In the end, we never had any direct conflict with him. Yes, he spent quite a while in our research institute as a test subject, but he was already dead when he was sent here. We had nothing to do with it. I think that if we explained things clearly, he might even be deeply grateful that we brought him back to life." Luo Meiyue pointed at her father's head, looking at him as if he were nothing but a pig.
Hearing his daughter put it that way, Luo Bingyi realized that it did seem to be true. Hong Mo had already been on the verge of death when he was sent over; they had had absolutely nothing to do with it.
"Then what do we do now?" Luo Bingyi was completely led around by his daughter.
"Call back the esper squad first, then negotiate with Hong Mo." Luo Meiyue waved a hand and issued the order. Then, as if she had suddenly remembered something, she said to her father, "You can contact them, right? Don't tell me you can't even manage that."
Although his daughter had looked down on him, Luo Bingyi did not get angry. He hurriedly notified the esper squad led by Han Nian. By then, after one chased and the other fled, the esper squad had already pursued Hong Mo to the sealed chamber where he had first awakened.
"Captain Han? The order to capture that test subject has now been lifted. Whatever you are doing, stop it all. Did you hear me? Stop everything and withdraw immediately."
Han Nian, who had been running, came to an abrupt halt upon hearing the order.
"What is it, Captain?" The other three asked in confusion when they saw Han Nian stop.
"Are you fucking sick?!" Han Nian roared into his earpiece, then tore off the earbud he was wearing, threw it to the ground, and stomped on it twice.
The other three team members were at a loss in the face of their furious captain.
"The mission is canceled. We're going back," Han Nian told his three subordinates.
"The mission is canceled? Then what about Zhu Yao?" Zhu Yao had only recently joined the squad, and his personality had been extremely irritating, but he had still been one of their teammates. Were they really just going to let someone kill him for nothing?
"Guess that bastard was just unlucky." After holding it in for a long time, Han Nian finally muttered that sentence. He did not want to explain any further and took the lead in heading back.
They all fell silent. To outsiders, they were espers with immense power and a status above ordinary people. But in truth, they understood that they were merely tools in the hands of those above them. Yes, tools.
Although Hong Mo was running, part of his attention had remained fixed on the squad pursuing him. The moment they stopped, he noticed.
The mission was canceled?
Even Hong Mo was baffled. After thinking about it for a while without reaching any conclusion, he could only blame it on the person in charge of this research institute having a fever in the brain. In any case, it was good that no one was chasing him anymore. Hong Mo was finally able to focus on clearing away the remaining flames on his body.
The few patches of flame left were all close to his back. It was rather awkward for Hong Mo to cut them away himself. But he had no choice, because he could already smell the stench of burning flesh—and that was with his own energy protecting him.
Just as Hong Mo was at a loss, he accidentally spotted the shattered cultivation tank. The dark green ** was still inside.
Water could put out fire, right?
Even Hong Mo was not sure anymore. Did that piece of common sense still apply? Treating a dead horse as if it were alive, Hong Mo lay back down in the cultivation tank.
When the dark green ** came into contact with the flames, it gave off a sizzling sound. Acrid black smoke rose from the cultivation tank. Caught off guard by this, Hong Mo was nearly knocked unconscious by the stench of the smoke.
I'm going to pass out!
He really was about to pass out. What the hell was that smell? Hong Mo held his breath and carefully sensed the changes in his body. Fortunately, although it smelled awful, it did not seem harmful to his body. Or rather, such harm had no effect on Hong Mo's mutated body.
The other piece of good news was that the ** was effective at extinguishing the blue flames. Though it was slow, Hong Mo could "see" the blue flames on his back gradually shrinking and going out in the **.
Just as the cultivation fluid was nearly used up, the blue flames finally went out completely.
Hong Mo let out a breath. It seemed he truly could not let his guard down against espers. Even with abilities that seemed familiar, no one knew whether they might have some special aspect.
After getting to his feet, Hong Mo looked helplessly at the dozen or so wounds he had carved into himself and found himself speechless. Was he cursed with terrible luck? Had things gone wrong the moment he set out?
He had only just emerged from the cultivation tank, yet he was already covered in wounds.
