Chapter 3: Reason
After leaving the school, Hong Mo found a bank and withdrew all the money from the cards. If he was right, his and Mu Siyu's bank cards would be frozen before long.
In a dark alley, Hong Mo flicked the useless bank cards away. With a crack, they sliced into a large tree, frightening out one of the men following them.
"Talk. Why are you following us?" Hong Mo had noticed more than one person trailing them ever since they withdrew the money.
"Money!" A pockmarked middle-aged man bluntly stated his purpose. At the same time, four men closed in from several other directions.
"I'd heard that people who withdrew money nearby got robbed soon afterward. So it was true." Hong Mo shrugged.
"Don't worry. We only take money, not lives. But if you resist, that's another matter." The pockmarked man in the lead spun his dagger in a flashy flourish.
"What a shame. You picked the wrong day." Supporting Mu Siyu, Hong Mo narrowed his eyes to slits and smiled.
"Back!" An inexplicable sense of dread came from Hong Mo, making the pockmarked man quickly retreat. Perhaps this was the instinct of someone who often walked the edge of danger.
Hong Mo stamped down with his right foot. Five currents spread from beneath his sole and struck all five men in an instant. Amid crackling electricity, white smoke rose from their mouths. Their eyes rolled back, and they collapsed helplessly to the ground.
After withdrawing the current, Hong Mo walked over to the pockmarked leader.
Hong Mo hesitated. Should he kill these guys? This was different from Mu Siyu losing control and freezing so many people. Mu Siyu could claim she had gone berserk and had never considered the consequences. But he would be making the decision while completely clear-headed.
Hmph! Hong Mo rubbed his temples. These guys really had nothing better to do than court death.
Mu Siyu's rampage definitely could not be covered up. More than a year had passed since the meteor shower, yet no incidents involving superpowered people had spread through society. Still, one thing was certain: the government must have gathered other superpowered people, only keeping them hidden away.
Hong Mo and Mu Siyu had discussed this long ago. They did not want to join any government organization. It had nothing to do with patriotism; they simply did not want to become someone's tools.
Mu Siyu had once told Hong Mo, "If the country is in danger, I'll definitely do my duty without hesitation. But I absolutely cannot tolerate becoming certain people's tool. More importantly, I simply cannot accept that only those people represent the country." Mu Siyu had been extremely serious when she said that.
Who exactly were those "certain people"?
Fine, that was what Mu Siyu meant. So after Mu Siyu lost control, Hong Mo's first thought had been to run away and disappear under assumed identities.
They would be hunted down, wouldn't they? Mu Siyu's accidental rampage had probably killed a great many people. In a harmonious society where even one or two accidental deaths were treated as major incidents, this was no different from an earth-shaking catastrophe.
Whether for legal reasons or research, people would come after him and Mu Siyu. If that was the case, there would definitely be no shortage of battles ahead. If he fought while hesitating, he probably would not live long.
Hong Mo sighed again.
He had been sighing a lot lately. Sure enough, there were too many things beyond his control. Hong Mo took out a cigarette, lit it, and casually held it at the corner of his mouth without deliberately inhaling, simply letting it burn.
That was how Hong Mo smoked. Jiang Han had called it a pure waste more than once because of it.
More than ten minutes later, someone finally cried out upon discovering the five men. When the police arrived, they found only the five corpses and half a cigarette that had fallen to the ground.
In a small motel, Hong Mo finally waited for Mu Siyu to wake up.
"Where am I?" After waking, Mu Siyu sat up warily. With a sweep of her right hand, a ring of crystalline ice shards appeared around her body.
"Looks like you remember what you did?" Hong Mo rolled up from the sofa and yawned.
"You didn't do anything to me, did you?" Mu Siyu tugged at her clothes and asked.
"To you? Do what?" Hong Mo did not understand.
"I remembered a story." Mu Siyu's lips curled upward.
"Hm?"
"A story about the difference between a beast and someone worse than a beast."
"Tch. I didn't do anything to you. Disappointed?" Hong Mo curled his lip disdainfully.
"Mmm..." Mu Siyu drew out the sound and shook her head. "What do you think of that story?"
"Stop changing the subject. You remember what you did, right?" Hong Mo did not want to play dumb with Mu Siyu. It had been over a year. If he still did not understand Mu Siyu's thoughts, then he would be the idiot. They were close, but their relationship had definitely not reached the point of being boyfriend and girlfriend. Mu Siyu had no feelings for him, and he did not want to chase a woman who would never fall in love with him.
Though when they had first started living together, he really had been excited for a few days.
"I'm sorry." Mu Siyu lowered her head.
"You... what good is apologizing? Can you tell me what happened now?" Hong Mo truly was not used to seeing Mu Siyu like this.
"I have a younger sister, Mu Siyue."
"You've mentioned her before."
"That Wang Aoyun is the mayor's son. He's one of those certain people."
"I know that too. Can't you tell it all at once?" Hong Mo scratched his head helplessly.
"You were the one who interrupted me." Mu Siyu argued.
Through Mu Siyu's explanation, Hong Mo finally understood what had happened. Simply put, Wang Aoyun had relied on his power and influence to try to get his hands on several pretty girls.
If it had been an ordinary woman, she would probably have thrown herself into his arms long ago. After all, he was the mayor's son, a second-generation official. Unfortunately, he had hit a wall with Mu Siyu.
When the soft approach failed, he prepared to use force. First, he got his hands on Mu Siyu's friend, Tang Tiantian. Then, using Tang Tiantian, he lured Mu Siyu to a KTV and drugged her.
Naturally, he failed. Mu Siyu's superpower was related to water, so once the drug entered her body, it was diluted endlessly until it had no effect at all. Yet that bastard still refused to give up and tried to force himself on her.
To avoid trouble and drawing the public's attention, Mu Siyu merely taught him a lesson and did not use her superpower. After the mutation began, Mu Siyu's physical strength alone was more than ten times that of an ordinary person. Wang Aoyun, who spent every day drowning himself in pleasure and had hollowed out his body, was naturally no match for her.
Because of this, Mu Siyu and Tang Tiantian had essentially cut ties.
Unexpectedly, Wang Aoyun still had not given up. Perhaps to him, what he could not obtain was the most alluring.
Somehow, he learned that Mu Siyu had a younger sister. And once he found out that Mu Siyue was also a great beauty, he became even more obsessed, dreaming of having both sisters at once.
Mu Siyue was unlike her older sister Mu Siyu. She was only an ordinary person. Wang Aoyun kidnapped and raped her, successfully assaulting her. The DV Wang Aoyun had shown Mu Siyu that day was footage of her sister being raped. He threatened that if she did not become his woman, he would train her sister into a sex slave and upload the video online.
What followed was simple. After watching the DV, Mu Siyu immediately lost control.
By the end of it, Mu Siyu was crying, saying that she had harmed her own sister. Hong Mo also fell silent. Such things often circulated online, but only when they happened close to home did one understand how heartbreaking they truly were.
If this had happened before, Mu Siyu might not even have had the strength to resist. In the end, she could only have become someone's plaything.
