Background

Before his enlightenment, Frog Immortal Lord was an unusually long-lived old toad, having survived at least fifteen or sixteen years—well beyond the ordinary lifespan of a toad. Ren Qing selected and found him before taking him in as an acolyte. 51

Ren Qing initially stationed him at the bottom of a well to protect fish roe. After the toad consumed a piece of Ren Qing's flesh and underwent enlightenment, he expanded rapidly, gained Molting Immortal Art talismans, and became Ren Qing's outer sect disciple. Unlike the Black Rat Dao Children, who died from the same experiment, Frog Immortal Lord proved highly compatible with the art. 7 9

As Ren Qing's cave abode expanded, Frog Immortal Lord became central to its operation. He consumed excavated earth, stored materials within his enlarged stomach, produced Resting Soil, and later served as Ren Qing's primary pill furnace. 24 41 50

Appearance

Frog Immortal Lord is a massive, male toad whose body becomes increasingly rocky and mountainous as he consumes soil and sheds his skin. He wears an unusual Daoist robe and is capable of shrinking to a portable size. 44 62

Frog Immortal Lord is simple-minded, guileless, and strongly motivated by self-preservation. He is visibly fearful of displeasing Ren Qing, immediately assisting when danger threatens the cave abode or when his master calls for him. 31 70

He has little initial interest in ascetic cultivation, preferring a pool full of female frogs and producing numerous offspring. Ren Qing openly criticized him for having “not the slightest heart for the Dao.” 29 50 Nevertheless, he learns practical arts exceptionally quickly and becomes diligent when assigned alchemy, earth consumption, or refining work. 50 92
