Background
Before entering Ren Qing's service, Dou Sangu was a wild rat demon drawn to Water Mouth City by his inborn ability to sense “great medicine.” He traveled disguised as a scholar, but his true form was a rat-faced man. His interest in playing children exposed a predatory streak during this period. 35
After being intimidated by Ren Qing and the strange Dao Children around the coffin shop, he accepted Ren Qing as his master. Ren Qing ordered him to discard the demon name Dou Sangu and renamed him Mouse True Person. 47
Ren Qing later enlightened Mouse True Person and the surrounding rat swarm through the Five Elements Immortal Art. Mouse True Person became Ren Qing's third disciple and was placed in charge of the newly named Mouse Children. 51
Appearance
Mouse True Person's appearance changes with his cultivation and transformations. His original demon form was a rat-faced humanoid, while his later form is that of a cultivated field mouse in a Daoist robe. 35 47 65
- In humanoid rat form, he has elongated cheeks, a pointed rat snout, powerful limbs, and claw-like nails. 35
- Following enlightenment, he grew to roughly Ren Qing's knee height. 51
- During the completion of his Five Elements Immortal Art, his fur became mottled with earth-yellow, red, green, blue, and gold coloring. 65
- He is later noted for particularly gaudy golden hair while wearing his Daoist robe. 67
- He frequently emerges from shadows or tunnels, using Earth Escape Art to appear at Ren Qing's side. 59 108
Personality
Mouse True Person is intensely reverent toward Ren Qing. He considers his acceptance as a disciple an exceptional immortal opportunity and repeatedly declares that he would accept death in return for Ren Qing's cultivation and favor. 47 64
He is ambitious despite his deferential manner. He wants to prove that rats can produce a great demon, envies his senior brothers' examination success, and ultimately wins the provincial examination himself. 51 62 68 His ambition is paired with a talent for flattery; Ren Qing recognizes that he becomes increasingly skilled at praising his master's supposed divine bearing. 69 93 95
He is also practical, diligent, and cautious. He maintains the cave dwelling, organizes supplies, gathers intelligence, and uses his calamity-sensing ability to judge whether an apparent opportunity is dangerous before acting. 60 63
