Background

Jian Li is from Jade Capital, where she became a Chosen Player when the world was first gamified. She helped defend the city against monsters and was once partnered with Chu Huai during early reclamation operations in assimilated zones. 291 293

She is the younger biological sister of Jian Ning, another exceptionally gifted Chosen Player. The sisters had opposing temperaments—Jian Ning was outgoing while Jian Li was reserved—but an accident eventually drove them apart. Jian Ning's name and reappearance can still leave Jian Li visibly distressed. 219 220 221

The estrangement involved Jian Li unintentionally taking Jian Ning's Chosen skill and subsequently refusing to use it. Jian Li became the only player known to possess two Chosen skills, but her refusal became entangled with a later disaster in Jade Capital in which their uncle died. Jian Ning blamed her, leaving Jian Li with recurring memories of fire, ashes, and her sister's condemnation. Yan Fushou maintains that Jian Li, who was only sixteen at the time, was not responsible for the Coordination Bureau's failures to protect and support the sisters. 219 220 291

After top players failed to clear Lu Xiu's original S-rank civilian instance, Resident Evil, Yan Fushou summoned Jian Li to assess it. She entered immediately after reading the forum discussion, cleared it, and became unusually animated in her evaluation, calling the instance fun and insisting that its Architect be found. 23 26

Jian Li is terse, detached, and difficult to read. She often answers with only a few words, avoids unnecessary conversation, and maintains an almost completely blank expression even in tense situations. 23 57 161

Her restraint does not mean she lacks emotion. While Lu Xiu prepares the Class Contest Instance, Jian Li expresses interest in testing the Berserker class before committing to it.
