George looked at Fred as though he were an idiot, leaned close to his ear, and said, "My foolish little brother, this is the Girls' Bathroom!"
"You're the little brother!" Fred glared at him.
Then the three others glared at them, and they shrank back, saying no more.
Moaning Myrtle seemed not to have heard them. Still lost in her memories, she continued, "So I opened the door and told him to go away and use his own boys' toilet. Then..." She paused, looking immensely pleased with herself. Puffing out her chest, her face glowing, she declared, "I died!"
The Golden Trio all froze for a moment. What was there to be proud of?
Fred and George, however, clapped in unison. "That's amazing!"
Ron looked at them as though they were idiots, and Hermione's mouth twitched. Harry paid no attention to any of that and pressed, "How did you die?"
Moaning Myrtle put on a mysterious expression. "I don't know. I just saw a pair of enormous, terrifying yellow eyes. My whole body felt as though it had been seized, and then I floated away-"
At this point, her voice grew excited. "Then I came back! Because I wanted to settle the score with Olive Hornby!"
Harry glanced at Hermione. Everything seemed to match her deductions. The way Moaning Myrtle had died sounded very much like an encounter with a basilisk.
And the boy's voice had most likely belonged to a young Voldemort. Following that line of reasoning, Hermione was probably right: the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets was here!
"Where did you see those eyes?" Harry asked tensely, hoping Myrtle hadn't overlooked that detail when she died.
"Somewhere around there-" Moaning Myrtle pointed vaguely toward the large bank of sinks ahead.
