Background and History

Childhood and Infection

Lupin became a werewolf after Fenrir Greyback attacked his family in retaliation against his father, Lyall Lupin. Lyall had recognized Greyback despite his disguise as a Muggle and recommended detaining him until the next full moon to establish his identity. The presiding judge dismissed the warning and released Greyback, who subsequently murdered the two Ministry officials escorting him. Greyback then attacked the Lupin household; although Lyall drove him away, he managed to bite the young Remus. 427

Wolfsbane Potion Trials

Lupin served as a test subject for Vaughn’s attempts to prevent full-moon transformations. During a trial of Wolfsbane Potion 2.0 beneath the Magical Moon inside Vaughn’s suitcase world, he did not transform, but suffered extreme pain and lost consciousness. 264

He subsequently tested version 2.1 with Hermione recording the results and Cheng Quandao observing. Vaughn allowed Lupin and the other werewolf wizards to take revenge. They tortured Greyback rather than permitting him a quick death; his mindscape and soul were destroyed before he died. Lupin later remained conflicted about his own response, acknowledging that he had been comparatively fortunate among werewolves but had nevertheless lost emotional control when confronting Greyback. 429 430

Learning the Truth About Sirius

Lupin inferred that Vaughn had helped Sirius Black escape from Azkaban and angrily confronted him in the Whomping Willow passage, still believing Sirius had betrayed James and Lily. Vaughn showed him the Marauder’s Map, revealing that Peter Pettigrew was alive and hiding as Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers.
