Background and History

Hogwarts and the First Wizarding War

While attending Hogwarts, Lupin was isolated during full moons in the Shrieking Shack, a safe house Dumbledore established through a tunnel beneath the Whomping Willow. The “shrieks” attributed to the house originated from Lupin’s transformations. 263

He was a close friend of James Potter and belonged to the same group of Hogwarts friends that included Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. James became an Animagus specifically to accompany Lupin during his transformations. 89

After graduation, Lupin joined the Order of the Phoenix and fought Death Eaters during Voldemort’s first rise. Despite werewolves finding comparatively better conditions under Voldemort’s forces, Lupin rejected the Death Eaters because he valued justice, order, and kindness. 125

Following the war, Lupin withdrew from society, refusing Dumbledore’s offers of work out of pride and fear that his condition would burden others. He spent years living in poverty and isolation. 131

Joining Vaughn Weasley

Lupin emerged from seclusion after learning of Vaughn Weasley’s Wolfsbane Potion and his efforts to organize wandering werewolves. He initially suspected Vaughn of exploiting werewolves for personal ambition, especially after witnessing him alter Rosmerta’s memories with memory magic. 71

Vaughn countered Lupin’s objections by confronting him with the realities of the Werewolf Registration Act and the conditions faced by unregistered werewolves. Lupin remained wary, but witnessing the hope spreading through the London werewolf camp persuaded him to stay involved. 71 72

He became one of WAC’s leading werewolf representatives and eventually its vice-chairman, helping to administer settlements, organize operations, and represent werewolf interests within the organization. 156 335

Werewolf Community Work

Lupin worked in Manchester alongside werewolves attempting to reintegrate into Muggle society. He recognized that employment and housing did not resolve the deeper pressures of lycanthropy, secrecy, loneliness, and social exclusion. 124

He also identified a growing crisis among young werewolves whose magic awakened but who were not registered by the Book of Admittance and therefore could not enter Hogwarts normally. Lupin feared that untrained children might suffer magical outbursts or become Obscurials. 124

Lupin supported WAC’s efforts to improve werewolf rights, but repeatedly worried that Vaughn’s influence over the community was becoming fanatical and dependent. 89 263

During WAC’s North American expedition, Lupin served as a senior delegate, assisted with werewolf and dragon registration, and objected to MACUSA’s discriminatory treatment of werewolves. 171 172

Lupin is a thin, scruffy, middle-aged wizard whose worn clothing and exhausted appearance reflect years of poverty and wandering. Despite his scars and disheveled presentation, he carries himself with a gentle, melancholy bearing. 71
