Ch. 401Miss Potter and Mrs. Weasley
Plot points and events
- A Potions-class assessment goes badly for several students when mistimed or weakly performed transformation spells produce bizarre effects: Dean grows a thick beard, Seamus’s arm stretches and goes limp, and Crabbe and Goyle develop animal features.
- Harry and Ron drink their potions and are transformed into girls, earning Snape’s mocking labels, “Miss Potter” and “Mrs. Weasley.” Malfoy and the class laugh at them, and Ron flees in embarrassment.
- Hermione also fails the assessment: her hair grows uncontrollably. Unlike the others, she quickly brews and drinks an antidote using the Essence Charm, then cuts off the excess hair. She had used Vaughn’s recipe, which improves the potion’s taste with powdered daisy root.
- Hermione leaves for the Gryffindor common room, upset with herself for sacrificing her chance at a Potions exchange. Harry and Ron later decide she may have failed deliberately and try to find out why.
- Their temporary transformations attract teasing around Gryffindor Tower. Lavender is especially taken with Ron’s appearance and nickname, “Ronnie,” while Harry jokes about calling him “Mrs. Weasley.”
- Meanwhile, Cheng Quandao warns Pheobe that Vaughn may not welcome her in the laboratory and suggests she wait outside. Pheobe ignores him and enters anyway.
Character developments and interactions
- Hermione is frustrated and conflicted: she resents Harry and Ron, yet seems to have given up the exchange opportunity for them. Her controlled use of the antidote demonstrates her Potions and magical skill despite her assessment failure.
- Harry worries about repairing the trio’s friendship and tries to understand Hermione’s behavior. He remains more composed than Ron while enduring the teasing.
- Ron is humiliated by his transformation and reacts defensively to the attention, though Lavender’s admiration embarrasses him even more.
- Snape remains strict and unsympathetic, formally failing the trio while making a pointed joke about Harry and Ron’s appearance.
- Cheng is wary of becoming entangled in the uncertain relationship between Pheobe and Vaughn. Pheobe is proud, impatient, and determined to see Vaughn, even when advised not to.
- Hermione’s friendship with Harry and Ron is strained but not broken; Harry’s concern suggests he is trying to bring them back together.
Significant themes
- Consequences of imperfect magic: Small errors in timing or emotional focus can produce unpredictable results.
- Friendship and sacrifice: Hermione may have risked an important opportunity for her friends, while Harry tries to preserve the trio’s bond.
- Embarrassment and social teasing: Harry and Ron’s transformations make them targets of jokes, but also reveal how they respond to vulnerability and attention.
- Expertise and learning: Hermione’s ability to apply Vaughn’s research and brew an antidote contrasts with the students’ lack of preparation and the limits of classroom instruction.
