Ling Zhuo was one of the Spirit Clan's most heavily cultivated younger-generation talents. Ling Haonan stated that the declining clan had poured its efforts into nurturing Ling Zhuo, while Ling He—his great-grandmother—personally supported his rise and sought to restore the clan's dignity through him 503.

Within his clan, Ling Zhuo regarded few of his peers as equals and originally measured himself against exceptional ancient-clan talents such as Huo Xuan. As an important younger-generation disciple, he was normally accompanied by sufficiently powerful protectors whenever undertaking significant assignments 373 647.

At a Holy Pill City trading fair, Ling Zhuo purchased the Source Spirit Pattern Crystal and an ancient cauldron. He then sent the cauldron, along with a cup of wine, to Xiao Yan as a deliberately provocative gift; this began their open rivalry 364.

As the Spirit Clan expanded its influence in Holy Pill City, Ling Zhuo became its public face and effective authority. He pressured major families to become Spirit Clan vassals and openly treated the Cao Clan and Dan Clan as targets of plans prepared decades in advance 422. Before the convention, Ling Zhuo learned that Xuan Leizi, one of the Pill Tower's three leaders, had secretly joined the Spirit Clan's plans. However, Ling Luo's sacrifice affected him enough that he promised to bring Ling Yu out of the Pill Convention alive, revealing some loyalty toward his fellow clansmen 561.
