Listening to Snape, Malfoy's expression softened slightly, but he quickly stiffened his face again, putting on an unconcerned look.

"What are you trying to say?"

"Whatever your plan is, you have to stop!" Snape said.

"That's impossible!" Malfoy cut him off. "Their plan failed, but mine didn't!"

The two faced off, and the air was thick with tension.

"Listen to me." After a pause, Snape spoke softly. "I want to help you. I swore to your mother that I would protect you. I made an Unbreakable Vow—"

"You've said that already." Malfoy's face remained expressionless. "I don't need your protection, but I don't mind hearing it again."

"This time is different." Snape shook his head. "You have no idea that besides the traces left by Fiendfyre in the underground classroom corridor, there was another kind of magic. It was that magic which killed the Fiendfyre."

"What are you trying to say? It was just a spell—"

"It was Avada Kedavra."

Malfoy jerked his head up and stared at Snape in disbelief.

"What did you say?!"

"I didn't believe it at first either, but it's true. I swear it." Snape was no longer so agitated. He spoke calmly. "Not just me—the other professors know too. Minerva McGonagall, Flitwick, Dumbledore— That evil magic filled the underground classroom corridor. It was far too obvious."

Malfoy's already pale face turned even whiter.

"So you mean—that Ollivander has learned the Killing Curse?"

"No. You should say he has always known it." Snape shook his head. "I just never expected his Killing Curse to be so—powerful—"

A flash of fear passed through Snape's
