Background / History

Before being sent to Britain at about six years old, Silvan travelled internationally with Lila and Garian. They entrusted him to his grandfather, Garrick Ollivander, when their work took them to Germany’s Black Forest, which they considered too dangerous for a child without the means to protect himself. 609

At Hogwarts, Silvan developed an unusually early specialization in wandlore. He studies magical runes, makes customized wands, and treats magical creatures and artifacts as potential sources of wandmaking insight. His work ranges from conventional wand construction to experimental designs such as spherical wands, large wand shafts incorporated into brooms, and replaceable-core concepts. 132 184 274

During the Chamber of Secrets crisis, Silvan recovered Tom Riddle’s diary and altered it into the Horcrux Codex, an animate magical book capable of absorbing and reflecting spells. He later learned that Voldemort’s soul fragment could be used as a wand core after being removed from a Horcrux. 123 124 561

Under Professor McGonagall’s supervision, Silvan completed the Animagus process while still in his second year. He kept the ability secret and delayed registering it with the Ministry, knowing that an unregistered Animagus could be imprisoned. 132 136 164 166 535

Appearance

Silvan’s human appearance is only lightly described in the available material. His Animagus form is distinctly identified as a cat. 164

  • Entirely black fur with four snow-white paws, giving the impression of “a black cat walking through snow.” 164
  • Heterochromatic eyes: one blue and one yellow. 164
  • His yellow Animagus eye matches the color of the ring he wears. 164

Personality

Silvan is intensely focused when researching wands or runes. He repeatedly works through failed experiments rather than abandoning them, once sustaining himself largely on milk and pumpkin juice for over twenty days so that the Animagus leaf in his mouth would not be disturbed by food. 132

He is practical and security-conscious. Silvan keeps dangerous discoveries—including his Animagus status, the Horcrux Codex, and aspects of his magic—restricted to people he considers trustworthy. He also refuses anonymous wand commissions, reasoning that an unidentified customer could be a Dark wizard. 124 166 466 535

Despite his secrecy, Silvan is considerate toward allies and magical creatures. He comforts Neville after mistakes, keeps promises to Tom, helps free Regulus Black’s soul fragment for Kreacher, and supports Lupin’s condition with Unicorn Magic. 132 148 296 662

Abilities & Skills

Wandmaking and Runic Craft

Silvan is a highly capable young wandmaker whose work can produce specialized traits based on the wood, core, and intended wielder.

  • Can carve a functional wand body in roughly fifteen minutes, approaching Garrick Ollivander’s usual speed. 212
  • Has carved the central wandmaking rune glyph hundreds of times and identified its connection to Egyptian gesture magic. 284
  • Creates custom wands using unusual materials, including wizard hair, magical-creature components, and Horcrux-derived cores. 177 394 561
  • Switches among multiple wands in combat to exploit different effects rather than relying on a single weapon. 407
  • Investigates wand recognition: Garrick explains that sincere recognition and use of wands Silvan creates can strengthen Silvan’s magical power and rune-work efficiency. 212 213 228

Transfiguration

Silvan is proficient in practical and advanced Transfiguration despite McGonagall initially considering his general talent unexceptional.

  • Earned an Outstanding in practical Transfiguration by turning a rabbit into blue Hogwarts-patterned slippers. 148
  • Performs Secondary Transfiguration on large objects, transforming a four-poster bed into a fire dragon and then a unicorn. 183
  • Can perform Human Transfiguration, including changing his arm into a feathered wing. 183
  • Was encouraged by McGonagall to submit a paper to Transfiguration Today on the influence of wands on Transfiguration. 221 236

Animagus Transformation

Silvan is an unregistered Animagus whose animal form is a cat.

  • Completed the first Animagus preparation by holding a Mandrake leaf in his mouth for a month. 132
  • Heard the “second heartbeat” after roughly half a month of spell practice, progressing faster than McGonagall had. 136
  • Successfully transformed during a thunderstorm after drinking the prepared Animagus potion. 164
  • Uses the form for covert travel, including leaving the Shrieking Shack without attracting notice. 228
  • Keeps the ability hidden because unregistered Animagi face imprisonment if discovered. 166 535

Unicorn Magic

Silvan can manifest the soul of a unicorn through Silver Mane, a form of magic particularly effective against Dark magic and corrupted souls.

  • Summons a bright-blue unicorn capable of confronting Voldemort’s soul fragments. 192 296
  • Uses Unicorn Magic to suppress or destroy Horcrux soul fragments. 296 561 723
  • Can remove the effects of multiple Dark spells from a person almost instantly, though the process has noticeable side effects. 766
  • His Unicorn Magic may be connected to Lupin’s ability to transform voluntarily while retaining his mind as a werewolf. 662
  • The unicorn’s soul assists Silvan in navigating the Third Task maze and avoiding magical threats. 409

Patronus Charm

Silvan mastered the Patronus Charm through repeated practice with a captured Dementor.

  • Initially produced a silver cat Patronus. 222
  • His Patronus later changed into a unicorn identical to the unicorn spirit he can summon. 223
  • Used a powerful Patronus to capture a Dementor and bring it to the Shrieking Shack for practice. 221

Horcrux Destruction

Silvan possesses the rare ability to neutralize Horcruxes by separating or suppressing their soul fragments.

  • Used a Basilisk fang and Unicorn Magic to destroy Slytherin’s Locket and free Regulus Black’s soul fragment. 296
  • Converted Tom Riddle’s diary into a modified wand whose soul fragment was no longer present. 561
  • Used the Sword of Gryffindor to carve runes into Ravenclaw’s Diadem, forcing its soul fragment into the inscription before it exploded and partially escaped. 714 723

Apparition

Silvan learned Apparition through harsh practice under Snape and further training in the Room of Requirement.

  • Endured repeated Splinching while learning under Snape’s supervision. 551
  • Successfully Apparated a short distance without Splinching. 551
  • Continued practising through the night in the Room of Requirement. 565

Divination

Silvan displays an unusual natural aptitude for Divination.

  • Finds standard Divination exercises unusually straightforward, comparing what he sees directly against textbook interpretations. 184
  • Trelawney considers him a genuine prophetic talent, noting that nearly all of his previous predictions had come true. 239
  • Has received visions through crystal balls and fire, though he cannot reliably divine his own future. 488 489 703

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Silver Mane — Wand associated with Silvan’s Unicorn Magic; used against soul fragments, petrification, and Dark magic. 118 192 296

  • Sword of Gryffindor — Temporarily lent to Silvan by Dumbledore for rune-carving work on Horcruxes. 714 723
