Chapter 780: Veritaserum
Malfoy still went to steal the Veritaserum, because Silvan threatened him, "If you don't go, I'll wake Alecto Carrow up right now."
Then Malfoy knew what he had to do. He turned and left the dungeon resentfully, vanishing into the darkness.
But Malfoy was even less efficient than Silvan had imagined. By the time he returned, four hours had already passed.
If there had been windows in the dungeon, they might even have seen the first rays of sunlight outside.
Still, at least he had not made the trip for nothing.
Malfoy walked over and shoved a small vial into Silvan's hand irritably.
"I knew you could do it." Silvan shook the bottle, watching the potion inside float lightly like feathers, confirming that it was Veritaserum.
"But why did you take so long? I thought you'd run off!"
"That's because someone had already noticed Alecto Carrow was missing!" Malfoy said expressionlessly.
"Who?" Silvan asked, puzzled.
He had looked at the Marauder's Map. When he found Alecto Carrow, no one else had been nearby. There was no way anyone could have seen them.
Besides, Alecto Carrow was not particularly well-liked. No one should have gone looking for her before dawn.
Under normal circumstances, no one would have noticed her disappearance until Hogwarts classes began three hours later.
"Professor Snape," Malfoy said, naming him.
"Snape—the headmaster—"
"Oh, the headmaster!" Silvan suddenly understood.
At Hogwarts, the headmaster could do far more than ordinary professors. For instance, he could lift the restrictions on Apparition within the school at any time, or ask the portraits for help.
Including the portraits of former headmasters, every portrait at Hogwarts was obliged to assist the current headmaster.
And when Malfoy had dragged Alecto Carrow into the dungeon, they had passed at least three different portraits.
