Background

The Emperor pursued a human Webway network that would free interstellar travel from the Warp. Magnus’s psychic message shattered the project, forcing the Emperor to use the Golden Throne to contain the breach; after his final battle with Horus, he remained on the Throne permanently. 292

For ten thousand years, the Golden Throne sustained the Imperium while consuming the Emperor’s strength and eroding his human consciousness. To most citizens, psychic power preserved the image of an immense golden sovereign, but those able to see through the aura found an aged, skeletal man enduring constant agony. 193 292

The Emperor maintained contact with Cisrain and Gamma World from afar, calling him daily during Gamma World’s early development and later supplying the Emperor’s Sword. 6 70 He regarded Gamma World as a crucial variable in his plans: its growth could help humanity escape Warp dependence, though increasing its strength would require him to relinquish some of his own authority. 193
