Background / History
The Tau Empire conducted two Sphere Expansions before the events surrounding Gamma World. During the First Sphere Expansion, it fought the Orks, concluded they could neither be assimilated nor negotiated with, defeated them, and expanded to seven Sept Worlds. 51
Its Second Sphere Expansion, led by Commander Qingxi, crossed Damocles Gulf and lasted more than two thousand years. The campaign gained the Empire over a dozen additional Sept Worlds, but the incorporation of large numbers of humans prompted retaliation from the Imperium of Man. 51
By the beginning of the Third Sphere Expansion, the Empire controlled hundreds of star systems and more than a dozen Sept Worlds. Its expanding territory increasingly strained communications and reinforcement times: decrees from the Supreme Ethereal could take days or over ten days to reach distant regions. 74
Commander Noah Jin sought Karamat for the Third Sphere Expansion, intending to use the world to strengthen the Empire for future expansion. The Empire had diplomatic ties with the Kroot inhabiting Karamat, but negotiations with its xenophobic three-eyed demihumans failed. 51
The campaign for Karamat ended in a major setback. Gamma World seized the awakened Forge World, captured an Ethereal, and forced Commander Phi'rios to abandon the Tau mothership and retreat. Phi'rios nevertheless vowed that the Empire would return for Karamat. 60 61
Government and Society
Caste System
| Caste / Group | Role |
|---|---|
| Ethereals | Absolute executive managers and supreme leaders of Tau society; their battlefield presence inspires near-religious fervor among nearby Tau forces. 50 77 |
| Fire Caste | The Empire's physically strongest and most warlike caste; Fire Warriors form its primary combat forces. 50 |
| Water Caste | Diplomats and civil officials responsible for negotiations, trade, and integrating other species into the Greater Good. 50 125 |
| Earth Caste | Engineers and technological innovators. 50 |
| Air Caste | Pilots of airships and warships. 50 |
| Auxiliary species | Allied or absorbed peoples fielded alongside Tau forces, including Kroot, Wasp-men, Nicassar, humans, and other xenos. 51 92 137 |
The Ethereals are portrayed as the Empire's formal ruling class, with the Supreme Ethereal Aun'Va at the pinnacle of the High Council. However, the Dao'Is Water Caste under Ze'en is described as exercising substantial hidden influence over the Empire's trade, diplomacy, and decision-making. 74 125
The Empire's hierarchy is not free of internal tensions. Expansion, resource competition, dissatisfaction with Water Caste concessions, and revelations surrounding the Greater Good create divisions among Tau factions and subject races. 62 128 131
Greater Good
The Greater Good is the Empire's unifying doctrine and the stated justification for assimilation, expansion, and sacrifice. Tau commanders and soldiers repeatedly frame their actions as service to the Greater Good rather than personal interests. 51 87
The doctrine is also used to absorb human worlds and auxiliary peoples. Some human populations formerly under Imperial rule become loyal Tau auxiliaries and regard Gamma World's invasion as a threat to the security and resources they gained under Tau governance. 116 133
Technology and Military
Artificial Intelligence and Drones
The Tau Empire relies extensively on artificial intelligence for administration, communications, logistics, and warfare. Its central AI systems process classified documents and coordinate decisions at a speed described as exceeding quantum-bit efficiency. 92
- Drones are ubiquitous civilian and military tools, comparable to pets in ordinary Tau life. 19
- Some advanced drones can attain high-level artificial intelligence and receive the rights of second-class citizens. 19
- Drone vessels and unmanned warships are common in Tau fleets, though their AI coordination can be disrupted by highly mobile enemy tactics. 123 141
- The Empire's interplanetary communications system uses planetary transmitters, space stations, stellar modulators, beam transmitters, and AI processing. 126
Ground Forces
Tau ground forces combine Fire Warriors, battlesuits, drones, armor, and auxiliary troops.
- Fire Warriors — core Tau combat personnel, deployed in both ground and space battle groups. 50 137
- Battlesuits — multifunctional combat platforms equipped with force fields, missile pods, fusion blasters, plasma accelerator cannons, and other weapons; their combat capacity is compared to Imperial Titans. 133
- Hammerhead railguns — vehicle-mounted railguns whose rounds are said to threaten even an Imperial Warhound-class Titan. 133
- Kroot and other auxiliaries — massed supporting forces used in invasions and planetary warfare. A single Eastern Sector planet could deploy tens of billions of Kroot and several billion Wasp-men soldiers. 51
- Human auxiliaries — assimilated human populations fielded alongside Tau forces and encouraged to prove their loyalty through war. 133
Fleet Doctrine
The Tau Empire emphasizes long-range firepower, rapid deployment, unmanned systems, and coordinated fleet maneuvers. Its warships employ macro cannons and lances capable of devastating orbital or planetary targets, while its fleets make frequent use of AI-controlled vessels and escort formations. 78 139
The development of the Horizon Curvature Engine significantly improved Tau reinforcement speed and contributed to the Empire's confidence after the Damocles conflicts. 92
Its logistical reach remains a strategic weakness. Long supply lines and slow reinforcements contributed to its reverses against Gamma World, whose interstellar highway allowed rapid force projection into the Eastern Fringe. 103 119
Ethereal Phase Ripper
The Ethereal Phase Ripper is a weapon distributed across the Tau frontier beyond the First Sphere Expansion. Under Commander Shadowsun's command, it was intended to deny territory to the Imperium even at catastrophic cost to Tau worlds. 140
Major Conflicts
Karamat Campaign
The Tau Empire attempted to annex Karamat during the Third Sphere Expansion, offering assimilation to its inhabitants while preparing to use force against those who refused. 51 53
Gamma World intervened through infiltration, captured Tau assets, deployed Blood Ravens and modified drones against Kroot forces, and ultimately activated Karamat's ancient Forge World. The awakening of its artillery and industrial systems forced Commander Phi'rios to withdraw. 54 60
Following the defeat, the Tau planned to regroup and reclaim Karamat. Relations with the Kroot deteriorated after heavy casualties and unfulfilled promises, escalating into skirmishes, theft of Tau technology, and civil war among subject races. 61 62
Eastern Fringe War
After Ethereal Amon'no was captured and a large human fleet appeared in Damocles Gulf, the High Council prioritized Damocles and temporarily abandoned the Eastern Fringe. This allowed Gamma World to expand into fringe territory and exploit local resources. 92 119
Tau commanders later recognized that Gamma World had steadily infiltrated and consumed their frontier worlds through warfare, corporate dealings, population transfers, and political manipulation. 127
The Empire mobilized fleets and administrative resources to counter Gamma World, while attempting to discredit it before the Imperium by linking it to Chaos. 132
Chaos Contamination Crisis
Tau-controlled ships from Ozrax transported corrupted creatures and Tau juveniles for Chaos-energy amplification, using “ghost pilots” and automated systems. 123
Chaos symbols, forbidden knowledge, mutations, and outbreaks then appeared across Tau worlds. The Empire traced the spread to Tau who had returned from Gamma World and concluded that Gamma World had manipulated it into appearing allied with Chaos. 125 126 127
Aun'Va had prior knowledge of Chaos and concealed aspects of it from the broader Tau population, fearing that public disclosure would destabilize belief in the Greater Good. 127 128
War with the Imperium
The Imperium began a major campaign against the Tau after the Empire's absorption of worlds near Damocles Gulf and the Lizehi Sector. 116
Imperial forces penetrated Tau territory through Damocles Gulf, with Space Marine Chapters including the Black Templars, White Scars, Blood Ravens, Red Scorpions, Minotaurs, and others participating in the conflict. 128 139 141
Commander Shadowsun assumed battlefield command as Tau forces executed strategic withdrawals and prepared counterattacks. 140
Notable Leaders
- Aun'Va — Supreme Ethereal, High Council leader, and public pinnacle of Tau authority; he possesses knowledge of the hidden threat of Chaos. 74 127
- Commander Shadowsun — Fire Caste commander awakened from hibernation for major wars; she urged the Empire to prioritize Damocles Gulf and later led the defense against Imperial incursions. 92 140
- Commander Farsight — prominent commander and disciple of Qingxi; his fleet was dispatched toward the Eastern Fringe in response to Gamma World. 92 127
- Commander Phi'rios — commander of the Eastern Fringe Second Fleet; led the defense of Karamat, accepted responsibility for its loss, and pledged to retake it. 54 60 61
- Commander Angsi — Tau commander active in the war against Gamma World; he condemned Gamma World's demand to inspect Tau worlds as an invasion pretext. 131 136
- Ze'en — influential Water Caste diplomat of Dao'Is whose negotiations brought numerous hostile species into the Greater Good. 125
- Commander Noah Jin — Ethereal commander pursuing Karamat as a strategic asset for the Third Sphere Expansion. 51
Relationships
- Gamma World — principal hostile power responsible for the loss of Karamat, the capture of Ethereal Amon'no, Eastern Fringe incursions, and Chaos-related destabilization operations. 60 92 127
- Imperium of Man — long-term military adversary; repeated wars in Damocles Gulf and surrounding regions have forced the Tau to commit major fleets and defenses. 92 116 139
- Kroot — allied auxiliary species with formal diplomatic ties to the Tau, though relations deteriorated after Karamat due to casualties and unmet expectations. 51 62
- Human auxiliary forces — absorbed human populations that serve the Empire and, in some cases, oppose Gamma World and the Imperium alongside Tau troops. 116 133
- Chaos — an existential contaminating threat whose existence and influence were concealed from much of the Tau population. 126 127 128
