Although Yun Yun is the official Sect Leader, Yun Leng holds substantial practical authority within the sect. He openly disregards her commands, convenes elders' assemblies without her initiative, and uses Gu He's ambitions to consolidate his own influence. 15 40

History

Conflict at Cloud Mist Mountain

When Yang Chen arrives at the Yunlan Sect, Yun Leng immediately insults him as a trespasser rather than treating him with the respect due a Dou King. After Yang Chen challenges him, Yun Leng refuses to apologize, attacks first, and threatens to make him kneel to death at the foot of Cloud Mist Mountain. 11

Yang Chen casually parries Yun Leng's sword strike, disarms him, and sends him flying with the shaft of his spear. Yun Leng coughs blood and crashes before the sect disciples; his sword lands embedded beside his head. The near-fatal display leaves him briefly terrified, but humiliation soon turns into hatred. 11

Yun Leng later orders the Cloud Smoke Sun-Covering Formation activated against Yang Chen, ignoring Yun Yun's orders to stand down. Yang Chen destroys the formation and warns that he will flatten Cloud Mist Mountain if Yun Leng provokes him again. 15 16

Struggle for Control of the Yunlan Sect

Following the incident, Yun Leng challenges Yun Yun's leadership rather than accepting responsibility. He accuses her of helping an outsider and of disregarding the sect, while invoking Gu He's feelings to pressure her. 16

By the time of the elders' assembly concerning the Tagore Desert's unusual aura, Yun Leng possesses most of the sect's practical authority. He cooperates with Gu He, intending to use the pursuit of a Heavenly Flame to secure Gu He's full support and eventually claim the sect leader's position for himself. 40

Tagore Desert Defeat

Yun Leng accompanies Gu He, Yan Shi, Feng Li, Yun Lei, and Yun Feng to the Snake-People Royal City in pursuit of the Heavenly Flame. Confident that Yun Shan remains alive, he is willing to confront forces far stronger than his group. 42

After provoking Lei Na, Yun Leng is trapped alongside Yun Lei and Yun Feng in Lin Sen's vine cage. The three elders fail to break through Lin Sen's defenses or escape by air. 42 43

Yang Chen later has Lin Sen release the captives, but Yun Leng immediately attacks in anger. Lei Na and Lin Sen counterattack together, leaving him sprawled on the sand with an unstable aura close to collapse. 46

Appeal to Yun Shan

After stabilizing his injuries, Yun Leng visits the reclusive Yun Shan and requests justice for the Yunlan Sect. He portrays Yun Yun as having abandoned the sect for Yang Chen and claims that Yang Chen's True Lord Hall secretly attacked senior sect members. 52

Yun Shan doubts much of Yun Leng's account but learns from him about True Lord Hall, Hai Bodong, Lei Na, Lin Sen, and Yang Chen's suspected alchemical ability. Yun Shan later assigns Yun Leng to investigate the Xiao Family, warning him not to overstep his authority. 52 53
