Background / History

Varian reclaimed Stormwind with Lord Lothar's assistance and developed it into the human capital and the Alliance's primary gathering place 1.

By the time Alpha Wolfclaw petitions Stormwind for Gilneas' readmission, Varian remains deeply resentful of Gilneas' withdrawal from the Alliance. He questions Alpha's loyalty, but permits him to prove the worgen's value by investigating the wilderness west of Elwynn Forest 3.

Varian is a tall, imposing man with a severe, martial bearing 2.

Personality

Varian is stern, demanding, and distrustful of those whose loyalty he doubts. His hostility toward Gilneas stems from its earlier isolationism, yet he is willing to grant its people a conditional path back into the Alliance through service and results 3 22.

He is an exacting wartime leader who responds to the Horde's mobilization by accelerating weapons production, readying warships, and demanding more trained soldiers 11. He also recognizes merit: Alpha's work in Westfall changes Varian's assessment of both Alpha and Gilneas' potential 11 22.

Although reluctant to cooperate with Garrosh, Varian ultimately accepts the need for Alliance–Horde coordination against Deathwing and participates in the leaders' council 40 41.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Gilneas Petition

Varian receives Alpha Wolfclaw's request for Gilneas' return to the Alliance. Suspicious of King Genn and the worgen, he demands proof of their usefulness before extending trust 3. Alpha's success in Westfall begins to alter Varian's view 11 22.

Ashenvale War

As Horde forces move into Ashenvale, Varian prepares Stormwind for war and leads Alliance troops aboard the Thunderclap 11 22. He grants official status to the Gilnean force, assigns the worgen and Sentinels the western flank, and later permits the worgen to join the main battlefield against the Forsaken 23 27 33.

Varian personally battles Garrosh during the large-scale Alliance–Horde confrontation, while Genn is poisoned saving him from Sylvanas' arrow 35 36.

Dawn of the Cataclysm

Deathwing's arrival ends the Ashenvale war and devastates Azeroth, including Stormwind 40. Though initially opposed to any arrangement with Garrosh, Varian accepts a leaders' council and votes for cooperation against the greater threat 40 41.

At the Moonglade Conference, Varian also votes in favor of Gilneas formally rejoining the Alliance 41.
