Background / History

Fugaku was the son of clan head Uchiha Tianrong and was raised as Tianrong’s intended successor. Tianrong spent years consolidating factional support for him, believing that Fugaku could secure the clan-head position before Uchiha Yan became old enough to challenge him. 4

His succession prospects became entangled with Uchiha Mikoto. Tianrong’s faction considered arranging a marriage between Fugaku and Mikoto, while the First Elder instead favored Mikoto’s growing attachment to Yan. Fugaku later developed a lasting resentment toward both Mikoto and Yan. 6 100

Tianrong subsequently arranged Fugaku’s engagement to Uchiha Yunko as a means of strengthening his faction before the Hidden Mist deployment. Fugaku reluctantly accepted, and Tianrong planned a grand wedding after his return from the war. 100 102

Although initially confident he could win leadership through his own achievements, Fugaku eventually sought Uchiha Madara’s aid after Yan’s strength made an independent victory seem impossible. Madara exploited this ambition, arranging the circumstances that led to Fugaku’s Mangekyō awakening at the cost of Fuchiu’s life. 195 202 222

Fugaku’s grandfather had betrayed Madara and returned to Konoha, giving Fugaku an additional reason to distrust Madara’s recruitment offers. He initially dismissed Zetsu’s approach and questioned whether the supposedly deceased Madara was genuine. 182 195 205

Personality

Fugaku is intensely ambitious and measures his worth through the clan-head position he believes should have been his inheritance. His early confidence gradually turned into bitterness as Senichi’s family won broad clan support through practical contributions and political success. 100 101

He is capable of courage and battlefield leadership, personally fighting at the front and ordering his troops to retreat when the Three-Tails endangered them. Fuchiu’s death also devastated him; he tried desperately to save his cousin even after being told the injuries were fatal. 202 203

His ambition repeatedly makes him vulnerable to manipulation. Fugaku accepted Madara’s promises, pursued the Eternal Mangekyō despite its cost, and later endured White Zetsu fusion in pursuit of greater power. Even after recognizing Black Zetsu’s deception, he continued outward cooperation while searching for a way to exploit the alliance for himself. 204 222 223 253

His attachment to his family could override his pursuit of power. He stated that he would have rejected the Mangekyō had he known Fuchiu’s life would be sacrificed, and initially refused to take Tianrong’s eyes because he wanted his father to remain alive for several more years. Before defecting, he also offered to take Tianrong and Yunko away from Konoha with him. 204 211 233 234

Fugaku can conceal his intentions and act cautiously when outmatched. He feigned continued unconsciousness to leave the battlefield, outwardly submitted to Madara while planning revenge, and later chose to consolidate influence within Hidden Mist rather than immediately attack Konoha. 204 222 252

Following the fusion with Tianrong’s eyes, Yan’s Enslavement Mark took control of Fugaku. Later events depict him retaining his intelligence, emotions, and ambitions while acting with loyalty to Yan under this hidden control. 234 252 253

His grief also developed into an obsessive desire for revenge against Hidden Mist. Although he knew Madara and Black Zetsu were the true masterminds behind Fuchiu’s death, he redirected his hatred toward the village while Black Zetsu remained useful to him. 251

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Fugaku awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan through the grief and rage caused by Fuchiu’s death. The awakening elevated him from an elite combatant to a shinobi assessed at roughly Kage Level. 202 206

  • His Mangekyō ocular power allowed him to fight the Three-Tails on equal terms for more than half an hour. 203
  • Prolonged use damages his eyesight and steadily depletes his ocular power. 203 210
  • He can suppress other Sharingan users with his Eternal Mangekyō’s genjutsu. 235
  • Madara interpreted his time-related ocular techniques as manifestations of the overwhelming wish to undo the tragedy surrounding his awakening. 206

Save State

Save State records Fugaku’s current physical condition and location for later restoration. He first used it before attempting to rescue Fuchiu from the Three-Tails. 203

  • Can preserve his injuries, pain, stamina, chakra, physical condition, and location at the moment of saving. 205
  • Allows him to establish a fallback before entering dangerous combat. 203
  • Cannot save another person unless their state was recorded beforehand. Fuchiu could not be restored after his death. 202
  • Is the ocular technique of his left eye. Fugaku told Tianrong that he could maintain up to three saves, each retained for ten years. 211
  • Its precise number of save points and duration were initially unknown to outside observers, including Yan and Black Zetsu. 205 206

Load State

Load State restores Fugaku to a previously saved condition and can return him to a recorded location, functioning similarly to a restricted teleportation technique. 205

  • Removes injuries, pain, fatigue, and chakra loss by restoring his saved state. 205 208
  • Can repeatedly refresh his body and position during battle. 203
  • Cannot restore ocular power consumed by Mangekyō use. 205
  • Restoring an earlier state also resets Fugaku’s chakra, physical condition, and accumulated strength to that saved point. 212
  • Is the ocular technique of his right eye and must be used together with Save State. Each use consumes substantial ocular power and cannot reverse ordinary Mangekyō deterioration. 211
  • Black Zetsu assessed the apparent teleportation as temporal rather than spatial. 205
  • Restoring a younger saved body could theoretically extend his lifespan, but Fugaku considered the ocular-power cost potentially ruinous for an ordinary Mangekyō. Tianrong proposed that the Eternal Eye might make repeated age restoration practical; this remained a proposed application rather than a demonstrated feat. 211 212

Susanoo

Fugaku can manifest a second-stage Susanoo after awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan. 203

  • Used Susanoo’s skeletal arm to retrieve Fuchiu from the Three-Tails’ attack. 203
  • Used the second-stage form to keep the Three-Tails on the defensive. 203
  • Sustained use rapidly drains his ocular power and left him critically injured and unconscious after the battle. 203

Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan

Fugaku obtained the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan by fusing Tianrong’s Mangekyō Sharingan with his own. 234

  • More than doubled his ocular power and eased the burden on his eyes. 234
  • Improved his chakra quality and physical constitution. 234
  • Removed the immediate threat of ordinary Mangekyō blindness, allowing sustained use of his ocular abilities. 210 234
  • The fusion also allowed Yan’s hidden Enslavement Mark to seize control of him. 234
  • Spiral White Zetsu performed the procedure by extracting Tianrong’s ocular-power source and transferring it into Fugaku’s existing eyes, rather than physically replacing Fugaku’s eyeballs. The fusion took fifteen days. 234
  • His Eternal Eye suppressed several Uchiha witnesses’ Sharingan and immobilized them in genjutsu during his staged defection. 235

Spiral White Zetsu Fusion

Spiral White Zetsu was initially forced into Fugaku’s body as Madara’s means of spreading a controlling curse. Fugaku later completed the fusion as a way to develop Yang Release and strengthen his body. 224 253

  • Increased his vitality and chakra reserves by roughly tenfold. 253
  • Raised his physical strength to the upper limit of Chūnin-level taijutsu, nearing Jōnin-level physical ability. 253
  • Restored his body’s ability to nourish his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, greatly improving endurance. 253
  • The fusion painfully corroded and reorganized his cells, leaving him unconscious after completion. 253
  • Provided a foundation for Yang Release, but Spiral White Zetsu’s cells were much weaker than genuine Hashirama Cells and could not grant ultimate Yang Release by themselves. 253
  • Black Zetsu judged direct fusion with genuine Hashirama Cells too dangerous for Fugaku’s existing foundation and proposed the complete White Zetsu fusion as preparation for a possible future attempt. 253
  • Before complete fusion, Spiral White Zetsu could carry Fugaku underground, assisting his covert entry into and escape from Konoha. 233 235

Battlefield Leadership and Intelligence

Fugaku personally led his faction’s shinobi through prolonged frontline combat and secured their absolute loyalty. His side contributed four hundred shinobi to the initial thousand-man Uchiha deployment against Hidden Mist. 103 202

  • Secretly observed Yan’s movements and identified his habit of assigning Shadow Clones to accompany his students on missions. Fugaku advised Madara to seize the students as hostages to force Yan’s real body to appear. 223
  • Continued practicing ninjutsu under Black Zetsu’s guidance after his defection, attempting to address weaknesses previously neglected while mastering the Eternal Eye. 251

Relationships

  • Uchiha Tianrong — Father, clan head, and primary political patron. Tianrong groomed Fugaku as his successor and later gave him his Mangekyō ocular power, enabling Fugaku’s Eternal Mangekyō awakening. Afterward, Tianrong died in a staged sacrifice designed to make Fugaku appear to have murdered him for his eyes. Fugaku initially resisted the eye transfer out of concern for his father’s life. 4 211 234 235
  • Uchiha Fuchiu — Younger cousin and loyal subordinate who sacrificed himself to save Fugaku from the Three-Tails. His death triggered Fugaku’s Mangekyō awakening. 202 203
  • Uchiha Yan — Political rival and object of Fugaku’s resentment; Fugaku repeatedly sought to eliminate Yan’s family and reclaim the clan-head position. Yan ultimately placed Fugaku under secret control. 100 222 234 240
  • Uchiha Senichi — Rival claimant to Uchiha leadership whose political skill and clan support repeatedly undermined Fugaku’s succession bid. 100 101 103
  • Uchiha Hao — Outspoken political opponent who publicly attacked Fugaku’s judgment during the deployment debate. Hao later detected the White Zetsu impersonating Fugaku at the battlefield camp. 100 231
  • Uchiha Mikoto — Proposed marriage match whom Fugaku resented after she instead became attached to Yan. 6 100
  • Uchiha Yunko — Fugaku’s fiancée and the mother of his unborn child. His concern for her safety complicated his decision to leave Konoha. Yan later publicly pledged to protect both her and the child. 100 231 233 243
  • Unborn child — Fugaku wished to see and safeguard his child before leaving Konoha. At Tianrong’s funeral, Yan announced that he would accept the child as his disciple and prevent mistreatment of the family. 231 233 243
  • Uchiha Madara — Manipulator who promised Fugaku power and clan leadership, engineered Fuchiu’s death to force his Mangekyō awakening, and treated Fugaku as a disposable pawn. 195 222
  • Black Zetsu — Ostensible ally and adviser who continued Madara’s plans, pushed Fugaku toward defection, and tried to direct him toward the Rinnegan. Both distrust one another. 231 252 253
  • Spiral White Zetsu — Initially a parasitic safeguard imposed by Madara’s faction; later completely fused with Fugaku to strengthen his body and ocular endurance. 223 224 253
  • Uchiha Chuan — Loyal follower who escorted Fugaku after the Three-Tails battle and later struggled to accept evidence of his defection. 203 204 238
  • Orochimaru — Battlefield commander who approved Fugaku’s return to Konoha and detected his feigned incapacitation. He privately coveted Fugaku’s Mangekyō for research. 203 204
  • Xuanming and Konan — Approved Fugaku’s recruitment as an Akatsuki fighter while agreeing that he should not be trusted. Xuanming confirmed his secret controlled allegiance with Yan. 239 240
  • Nagato — Identified by Black Zetsu as a prospective ally and wielder of Madara’s Rinnegan. Learning of Nagato’s eyes intensified Fugaku’s interest in obtaining the Rinnegan’s awakening method for Yan. 252
  • Minazuki Li — Yan’s Divine Clone operating in Kirigakure, who welcomed Fugaku’s proposed Blood Mist purge as an opportunity to remove rival clans and resistant factions. 253

Story Role / Major Arcs

Succession Struggle

Fugaku entered the Hidden Mist war intending to earn military merit, discredit Senichi’s family, and secure the clan-head position. His support for Konoha’s deployment plan backfired when the Uchiha interpreted it as willingness to sacrifice clan members for the village. 100

Senichi dismantled Fugaku’s arguments during the clan meeting, while Tianrong could only preserve Fugaku’s prospects by making wartime contributions the final test for succession. Fugaku was warned that failure would end his claim to leadership. 101 102

Tianrong subsequently advised him to prioritize survival. Fugaku considered the possible deaths of Senichi and Hao another route to succession, while Senichi’s successful negotiations with the Hokage further weakened Fugaku’s standing. The expedition ultimately included six hundred shinobi from Senichi’s faction and four hundred from Fugaku’s side. 102 103

Hidden Mist Campaign

Fugaku rebuilt much of his reputation on the battlefield, leading Uchiha forces personally and earning the title “Fierce Eye.” By the time Yagura’s controlled Three-Tails attacked, he was near Kage Level and commanded the loyalty of his troops. 202

Fuchiu’s death awakened Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan. He used Save State, Load State, and Susanoo to battle the Three-Tails, but the fight exhausted his ocular power and left him temporarily incapacitated. 202 203

He regained consciousness within minutes but continued pretending to be unconscious to obtain permission to return to Konoha. Suspecting that Madara had engineered the attack, he withdrew to study his new abilities and consult Tianrong, unaware that Yan was observing and directing his father. 204 209

When Fugaku later returned toward the front, Madara intercepted him and openly admitted responsibility for Fuchiu’s death. Fugaku submitted under threat while secretly intending to retaliate after obtaining the Eternal Eye. He then supplied intelligence for Madara’s attack on Yan and accepted Spiral White Zetsu’s parasitism, believing Load State could undo attempts to control him. 222 223 224

Eternal Mangekyō and Defection

After discovering the cost of Mangekyō use, Fugaku pursued the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan through Tianrong’s eyes. Yan had already enslaved Tianrong and used the eye fusion to take control of Fugaku as well. 210 234

Madara’s defeat by Yan briefly caused Fugaku to consider abandoning the succession struggle and accepting an elder’s position. His resentment prevailed, and Black Zetsu persuaded him to leave Konoha. A White Zetsu double remained at the battlefield camp while Fugaku secretly returned to visit his family and obtain greater power. 230 231 233

Tianrong’s death and Fugaku’s removal of his eyes were staged to convince Black Zetsu that Fugaku had murdered his father for power. The Uchiha Clan publicly expelled Fugaku and placed a 100-million bounty on him, while Konoha accepted him as a dangerous defector. 235 236 239

The eye fusion had already been completed before Tianrong’s death; the eyes Fugaku removed in front of the witnesses were Tianrong’s replacement Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Fugaku immobilized the witnesses with genjutsu, visited Yunko, and escaped underground to rejoin Black Zetsu. 234 235

The exposure of his battlefield double reinforced Konoha’s belief in his betrayal. His departure also cleared the way for Senichi’s appointment as acting clan leader and the absorption of Fugaku’s remaining followers into the unified clan. 237 238 241 250

Covert Agent

Unknown to Black Zetsu, the Akatsuki, and the wider Ninja World, Fugaku operates as Yan’s controlled agent. Xuanming and Konan agreed to recruit him as an Akatsuki combatant while concealing his true allegiance. 240

Fugaku continued seeking greater strength through the Eternal Mangekyō, Yang Release, and the potential path to the Rinnegan. His subsequent fusion with Spiral White Zetsu strengthened him substantially while deepening the web of control surrounding him. 252 253

Yan studied Fugaku’s awakening and ocular techniques through the Enslavement Seal, using the observations to create cultivable versions of Save State and Load State and a basic Eternal Mangekyō cultivation method. Yan’s resulting fifty save slots and fifty-year retention capability belong to Yan’s mastered methods, not to a confirmed advancement of Fugaku’s own techniques. 240

Fugaku used the mark in his Mental Sea to contact Yan during the complete White Zetsu fusion and obtain reassurance about its safety. Yan also maintained a second, deeply embedded mark securing control over Fugaku’s soul even if his eyes were lost, preventing the fusion from displacing his hidden allegiance. 253

Kirigakure Intervention and Rinnegan Pursuit

On learning that Hidden Mist intended to make peace with Konoha, Fugaku initially sought to prolong the conflict as revenge for Fuchiu. Black Zetsu revealed that the Fourth Mizukage remained under Madara’s lingering influence, offering a means of destabilizing the village. 251

Fugaku ultimately allowed the peace treaty to proceed. He presented Black Zetsu with a plan to eliminate rebellious factions, seize control of Hidden Mist, and recruit forces for a future confrontation with Yan. His actual intention was to gather useful personnel for Yan without damaging Konoha, which he expected his master eventually to control. 252

During these discussions, Fugaku pressed Black Zetsu for the method of awakening the Rinnegan so that he could relay it to Yan. Black Zetsu described the need for exceptionally powerful Yin and Yang chakra but withheld the significance of Indra’s and Ashura’s chakra, making his guidance incomplete. Fugaku had not awakened the Rinnegan. 252

After completing the Spiral White Zetsu fusion, Fugaku prepared to impose the Blood Mist Policy and purge Kirigakure’s kekkei genkai clans. Yan informed Minazuki Li, who supported using the intervention against the Kaguya, Hōzuki, and resistant Minazuki factions. Fugaku also discussed obtaining genuine Hashirama Cells through Danzo’s secret experiments, intending to alert Yan to the opportunity. These remained preparations rather than completed conquests or acquisitions. 253
