Yuan put away his spoils, bent down among the twelve headless corpses, and picked out the fattest one. It was the leader of the Third Surveillance Team. Yuan chopped off his right arm with one slash and carried it in his hand like a slab of pork.
The black trench coat on him had already been torn open in several places, soaked through with his enemies' blood, and gave off a thick, nauseating stench of gore.
He walked down the main street just like that, swaggering straight toward the Hokage Building.
It was already eight in the morning. Shops lined both sides of the street, and pedestrians bustled back and forth.
"Hey, why is that person covered in blood?"
"What's he carrying? Is that... a human hand?!"
"Wait, that face... I saw him six years ago! That's Uchiha Yuan! Uchiha Yuan, the one Itachi killed! Isn't he dead?!"
Terrified screams rose and fell along the street. The villagers on the road and the genin on patrol saw this killing god and all turned deathly pale, frantically squeezing toward both sides of the street like a receding tide, forcibly opening a wide path for him down the middle.
Yuan did not spare these passersby so much as a glance. His steps were steady, each one leaving a bloody footprint on the bluestone slabs.
When he reached the foot of the Hokage Building, the two chunin guards drew their kunai as if facing a mortal enemy. "Stop! This is the Hokage Building. Take one more step and we'll—"
"Get lost."
Yuan did not even lift his head. A killing intent so dense it seemed almost solid crashed down on them. The two chunin felt as if they had been struck by a heavy hammer; their legs went weak and they dropped to their knees, gasping for breath, without even the strength to hold their blades.
Yuan stepped over them and went straight up the stairs to the top floor.
When he arrived before the heavy carved wooden door of the Hokage's office, he had no intention of knocking. He raised his leg and drove force through it.
Bang—crack!
A thunderous crash rang out. The sturdy wooden door was ripped clean from its frame by that brutal kick, the entire door panel flying into the office like a hidden weapon and smashing into the floor in front of the desk, shattering into several pieces.
Inside the office, the Fifth Hokage, Tsunade, was bent over, reviewing documents. At the noise, she snapped her head up, a flash of fury passing through her eyes. Beside her, Shizune was so frightened that Tonton dropped straight out of her arms, while Nara Shikaku swiftly pressed a hand to his ninja tool pouch, a bead of cold sweat seeping from his forehead.
"Who are you, daring to barge into the Hokage's office!" Tsunade slammed a palm down on the desk, and the thick solid-wood desk split open with a crack.
Yuan strode in, using no honorifics at all and calling her by name.
"Tsunade."
He slammed the bloody severed arm in his hand onto the stack of unfinished documents on Tsunade's desk with a wet smack. Blood instantly stained the tablecloth red.
"Six years ago, that senile old fool the Third sent people to 'protectively isolate' my surviving family. This is the arm of the Third Surveillance Team's leader." Yuan's gaze was icy as he planted both hands on the edge of the desk and leaned forward. "Would you like to take a look at the special Root bracer on this arm? Or should I go bring his head here so you can pry open his mouth and see the Tongue Cursing Root Eradication Seal on his tongue?"
Shizune sucked in a breath of cold air, her legs going weak.
Shikaku frowned deeply. "Uchiha Yuan? You really are still alive... What exactly do you want?"
"To collect a debt."
Yuan straightened and raised three fingers.
"Three conditions. If you can't meet them, I'll tear down the Hokage Building."
Tsunade was so furious she laughed instead, a terrifying chakra pressure erupting from her body. "Brat, who do you think you're talking to? Believe me, I can cripple you right now!"
Yuan did not even blink. He withstood Tsunade's pressure head-on and took one step forward. Red Susanoo ribs flashed briefly at his side, that violent chakra even cracking the window glass.
"You can try. But before that, listen carefully to my conditions." Yuan's voice echoed through the hall, carrying an unquestionable dominance.
"First, that old dog Danzo secretly slaughtered people from his own village and stole Sharingan. I want you to immediately issue the highest-level S-rank wanted order and publicly put a bounty on his head!"
"Second, as for the truth behind the massacre six years ago, stop using nonsense like 'rebellion' and 'Itachi going mad alone' to fool ghosts. Make the truth public!"
"Third, from today on, the Uchiha Old Site and the survivors have full autonomy. The Hidden Leaf Village's Anbu, Root, even one of your dogs—if they dare set half a foot onto that street, I'll kill every one I see!"
The entire office went so quiet that a falling needle could have been heard. Only that severed arm was still dripping blood.
Tsunade stared at Yuan, her chest heaving violently. Though she had only taken over as Hokage three years ago, she had also uncovered some of the shady dealings behind the Uchiha massacre back then.
Shikaku hurriedly stepped forward and lowered his voice. "Lady Hokage, Danzo's matter truly should be dealt with. But the last two points this kid raised involve the village higher-ups and the emotions of the villagers. If you agree directly, the elders' council will rebel."
Tsunade took a deep breath and forcefully suppressed the rage in her heart. She looked at the severed arm on the desk, then glanced at Yuan's Sharingan, which made it clear he would not stop until he got what he wanted.
She reached out, pulled over a blank wanted order bearing the Hokage's seal, picked up a brush, and wrote several lines in quick strokes.
"I agree to the first condition. Danzo abandoned his post without authorization and harbored treacherous intentions. I'll sign the wanted order right now." Tsunade slapped the wanted order onto the desk. "But the second and third conditions involve too much. Those stubborn old fossils in the higher ranks will take time to deal with. Give me one month."
Yuan stared into Tsunade's eyes for three seconds, then snorted coldly.
"Fine. I'll give you one month."
Yuan turned around and, without even a word of farewell, strode straight out through the ruined doorway.
Only after the sound of his footsteps downstairs had completely vanished did Shizune collapse onto the sofa as if all her strength had left her, the clothes on her back soaked through with cold sweat.
Tsunade looked at the blood covering the desk, and her hand loosened. The pipe she had been holding in her mouth fell to the floor with a clack, scattering ash everywhere.
"That lunatic..." Shikaku wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, his voice filled with deep wariness. "This month, the Hidden Leaf Village may be turned upside down!"
