Background / History

Itachi took part in the Uchiha clan massacre six years before his final battle with Yuan. While Itachi carried out killings within the compound, Root operatives simultaneously murdered clansmen and harvested their Sharingan; later evidence identifies the event as a planned extermination and organ-plunder operation rather than the village's claimed internal Uchiha conflict. 1 3 7

During his final Tsukuyomi, Itachi recounts being forced by Danzo to choose between the clan's destruction, including Sasuke's death, or personally eliminating the clan in exchange for Sasuke's survival. He states that he killed 1,327 clansmen, including his parents, believing this was necessary to prevent civil war and preserve peace. 53

On the night of the massacre, Itachi confronted Uchiha Yuan, who had tried to lure him away from hidden survivors. Itachi withstood Yuan's initial taijutsu assault, used Tsukuyomi, and ultimately drove a kunai through Yuan's neck, leaving him for dead. 1 2
