History

Foundation and early legacy

Pure Yang Patriarch founded Taihua Sect and established the original Three-Arrows Oath, creating a millennium-long Outer Dao lineage. He also created the Pure Yang Art, described as the greatest qi-refining method of the last six thousand years. 697 817

Having foreseen that his opportunity for Dao Attainment lay in a later era, the Patriarch dispersed his cultivation, left behind a portrait carrying his divine intent, and merged his preserved remains with Zhenhai Island’s spirit veins to protect the sect’s future. 700 731

The Patriarch’s plan was ultimately directed not toward a blood descendant, but toward the future arrival of Zhou Jing. After awakening, he declared that Taihua Sect had been founded for Zhou Jing and pledged to assist his Dao attainment. 731 788

Decline under Ma Daoliang

Taihua Sect gradually fell from its former position over roughly four hundred years. By the opening of the Heavenly Emperor’s Treasury, it ranked near the bottom among Outer Dao sects; even its Holy Son Feng Qingyun was not considered exceptional among the Nine Sects. 632 688

Sect Master Ma Daoliang withdrew into seclusion after being severely wounded, while his Dao companion He Ming controlled sect affairs. Internal suppression, factional division, and pressure from the neighboring Myriad Beasts Sect caused Taihua to cede island after island. 688 690 692

Whisperwind Island, once among the sect’s weaker branches, had declined after Chen Xuanzi lost his earlier contest for sect mastership and was forced away from the sect. 688

Chen Xuanzi’s return and succession

Zhou Jing later assumed Chen Xuanzi’s identity and returned through Whisperwind Island. He restored its six-hundred-year-broken protective formation in moments with a breath of Pure Yang True Qi, establishing his authority before Taihua’s competing island and branch factions. 688 692

After Ma Daoliang’s death was publicly attributed to a failed Third Nine Heavenly Tribulation, Taihua’s Founders’ Hall selected Chen Xuanzi as successor. He initially refused twice before accepting after disciples and elders gathered at Whisperwind Island to petition for his leadership. 697

Revival of the sect

As sect master, Chen activated Zhenhai Island’s dormant spirit veins, concentrated Taihua’s fortune through the Nine-Yang Divine Void Axe, and oversaw rapid breakthroughs among the disciples. Within five years, the sect produced at least ten new Great Dao Golden Core cultivators. 700

Taihua committed nearly its full elite force to aid the Supreme Dharma Sect against the Sea Clan. The campaign yielded spoils equal to fifty years of accumulated sect wealth, and no Taihua disciple died in the battle. 700 707

During Zhou Jing’s Third Nine Heavenly Tribulation, Taihua withstood a coalition of Demon Sect branches, Righteous Dao forces, Outer Dao sects, and Sea Clan cultivators. Pure Yang Patriarch returned openly during the siege and declared that Taihua had been founded for Zhou Jing, not stolen by him. 785 787 788

Following Zhou Jing’s breakthrough to Supreme Grandmaster, Taihua became the foremost Outer Dao sect. Its later recognition included tribute from the East Sea Dragon Palace, invitations attended by all Three Daos, and Zhou Jing’s unanimous elevation to Dao Venerable of the Outer Dao. 796

Outer Dao leadership and expansion

Taihua’s support for the Supreme Dharma Sect during the Zhanglong Island crisis helped establish Chen Xuanzi as a central Outer Dao leader. After Moon Venerable’s apparent death, the newly appointed Supreme Dharma Sect Master Yue Yunqing agreed to follow Chen’s lead, while Shi Jinghong and Three Immortals Island also drew closer to Taihua. 717

The sect’s rise was accompanied by substantial territorial and institutional expansion. Myriad Beasts Sect returned occupied islands, Taihua established further subordinate sects and mortal jurisdictions, and Chen ordered increased recruitment in preparation for a future surge of spiritual energy. 721 772

Chen also resolved old internal divisions by personally instructing and aiding former rivals Pei Sheng and Mo Xilin in preparation for their Second Nine Heavenly Tribulations. This policy of magnanimity transformed former opponents into loyal supporters and strengthened the sect’s defensive foundation. 777

Third Nine Heavenly Tribulation and East Sea supremacy

When Zhou Jing’s identity as Chen Xuanzi was exposed, Taihua became the target of a combined siege involving the Three Daos, Sea Clan, Dragon Clan, and several Supreme Grandmasters. The sect’s defenders relied on the Nine Yang Heaven-Pacifying Grand Formation, allied East Sea demon kings, Moon Venerable under the identity Zi Chan, and Mortal Dust Immortal Sect cultivators to resist the assault. 785 786 787

Pure Yang Patriarch emerged from beneath Zhenhai Island during the crisis, restoring the sect’s ancient authority and openly recognizing Zhou Jing as Taihua’s intended master. Zhou Jing subsequently crossed the Third Nine Heavenly Tribulation and entered the Supreme Grandmaster realm. 787 788 796

Four years later, Taihua’s territory had doubled, Zhenhai Island had been raised into the sky, and Myriad Beasts Sect had ceded six major islands containing hundreds of millions of mortals. Zhou Jing’s election as Dao Venerable formalized Taihua Sect’s position as the foremost force of the Outer Dao. 796

By the appearance of the six Ascension Platforms, Taihua was the undisputed supreme power of the East Sea. Zhenhai Island remained its elevated headquarters, while Whisperwind Island had become a major branch rather than a marginalized outpost. 816

Three-Arrows Oath

Chen Xuanzi renewed the sect’s founding oath upon taking office:

1. Equal teaching — disciples are to be taught without regard to birth or status, with access to scriptures and treasures through the Sect Master Pavilion. 697
2. Revival and discipline — Taihua would return to first place in the Outer Dao within sixty years; wrongdoing against fellow disciples or the sect would be treated as an offense against the sect master himself. 697
3. Yielding to worthiness — if a disciple of greater virtue and talent emerged, Chen would relinquish the sect master position. 697 720

The oath became a major source of loyalty among disciples, including former servant and outer disciples elevated through the sect’s merit-based policies. 720

Chen’s later expansion policy retained the oath’s meritocratic basis but rejected indiscriminate admission. He refused to absorb opportunistic minor sects until Taihua could properly integrate its prior recruits and ensure that unworthy elements would not dilute its fortune. 798

Pure Yang Art

Taihua’s defining inheritance is the Pure Yang Art, a qi-refining method created by Pure Yang Patriarch. Its eighteenth layer was reached only by the Patriarch himself; Chen Xuanzi cultivated it to the sixteenth layer but did not pursue the seventeenth because it would require following the Patriarch’s Dao rather than his own. 731 817
