Background / History

Xie Yuan was raised as a favored young master of the Xie Clan and is the son of Madam Zhuge. His maternal uncle is the influential court minister Zhuge Jian, while Old Madam Xie has cherished him since childhood. As a boy, he jumped into an icy lake to rescue Old Madam Xie when the other young masters and young ladies froze at the shore. 271

In his early years, Xie Yuan cultivated the extravagant reputation of the “Cloud-Reclining Young Master.” He required household servants to use the title and was feared for his erratic temper; servants who addressed him incorrectly risked beatings. He also kept singers and performers in his entourage and was known to give beautiful maids away on a whim. 249 313

His friendship and rivalry with Xie Guan transformed his attitude toward learning.
