Geography and Settlements
- Lake and Heavenly Grotto: Azure Sea Lake has naturally developed a Heavenly Grotto world of its own. Its waters stretch beyond sight, with mist covering vast expanses of shimmering water 870 958.
- Population scale: The lake can nurture billions of living beings. Its connected marshes and lakes can individually shelter tens of millions 958.
- Surface islands: Hundreds of mortal dynasties occupy islands scattered across the lake 870.
- Wider water system: Branching waterways support cultivation dynasties, human cities, and demon kingdoms. Almost every dynasty enshrines a Dragon Palace tablet and sends annual tribute 958.
- Underwater settlements: Countless aquatic beings live beneath the surface. Under Gu Xing, the lakebed’s markets expand into bustling, brightly lit commercial districts 870 967.
- Regional standing: Azure Sea Lake ranks among Southern Shu’s greatest powers and is described as more prosperous than Qingqiu, Southern Mountain, and Flame Mountain 958.

| Location | Function |

Supernatural Properties
Innate Treasure Barrier
- An unnamed Innate Treasure suppresses and anchors Azure Sea Lake’s fortune, creating natural defensive barriers 870.
- Even a Demon Emperor would find it difficult to force entry. Gu Xing’s parents therefore instruct him to remain within the lake while they are away 870.
- This protection does not eliminate internal danger: rival households, clan factions, and court conspiracies operate inside the territory 900 940.
Three Stars Water Fruit Status
- The lake’s ruling lineage is associated with the Three Stars Water / Can Shui Fruit Status. Its path excels in divine-soul abilities 886 989.
- Attainment requires mastery of all nine Origin Divine Powers and recognition from Azure Sea Lake’s demons. A ruler’s standing among the population helps sustain the status 890.
- Territorial authority allows Gu Changze to draw upon the status’s power while Gu Jingming is absent. Within the lake, this makes him comparable to a being half a step into the ninth tier 897.
- Jiao Xiu attributes the ruling family’s recurring fratricidal struggles to the Three Stars Water path’s stellar and bloodline destiny 879.
- The status can seek fortune and avoid calamity despite possessing no intelligence 957.
Territorial Fortune
- After Gu Xing’s accession, the fortune of the lake’s mountains and waters continuously gathers around him 968.
- The Fortune Golden Dragon is a condensation of territorial fortune, not a flesh-and-blood True Dragon 969.
- Its development reflects effective government, popular support, and the suppression of rebellion 969.
- It detects Jin Zhou’s covert Qi-Gazing and injures his observing eye with a roar 969.
Government and Inhabitants
Royal Authority
The Dragon Monarch governs from the Azure Sea Dragon Palace. Before Gu Xing’s reforms, the Nine Great Clans monopolize most influential offices; royal succession combines bloodline legitimacy, cultivation strength, military command, and clan recognition 890 940 967.
Gu Jingming deliberately preserves rival branches of the Pure Water Demonic Dragon Clan and balances Gu Changze’s palace troops against Gu Changqing’s border armies. His confinement in Jianmu removes the authority holding that arrangement together 940.
Clans and Communities
| Group | Position and significance |
|---|---|
| Pure Water Demonic Dragon Clan | Ruling lineage. Gu Jingming’s collateral branch displaces the formerly dominant main branch, whose resentment resurfaces during the succession crisis 940. |
| Water Owl Tribe | One of the Top Three Clans. Hu Xiaozi commits three seventh-tier cultivators and 100,000 elite Dao soldiers to Gu Xing, seeking vengeance against the Blood Demon Cavern 941. |
| Celestial River Demon Crab Tribe | One of the Top Three Clans; supports Gu Changze. Its longstanding blood feud with the Water Tigers shapes factional alliances 894 941. |
| Silver Leech Clan | One of the Top Three Clans. Its rare members possess powerful disguise, illusion, and healing gifts, including the ability to repair divine-soul injuries 945. |
| Water Tiger Tribe | Backs Gu Xing with 40,000 troops. Its subsequent prosperity raises it from near the bottom of the Nine Great Clans to just below the Top Three 940 967. |
| Clear Spring Strange Stone Tribe | Traditionally tied to Gu Feng through its sacred Mother Stone. A branch later follows Han Yan into Gu Xing’s camp 894 939. |
| Three-Eyed Golden Toad Tribe | Formerly prominent clan that supports Gu Changqing. After defeat, it retains Three-Eyed Mountain but loses most other property; its members work the public spirit fields 967 969. |
| Ghost Flood Dragon Tribe | Loses its place among the Nine Great Clans after Gu Xing suppresses its rebellion 967 969. |
| Human population | A substantial, integrated political force with several seventh-tier cultivators. Jiang Ziyang’s visit to Tai Chi Hall signals human support for Gu Xing 941. |
| Black Fish clan | Sang Yu’s low-status background contrasts with the great clans; she becomes an especially loyal commander under Gu Xing 894 939. |
Military and Patrols
- Spirit-Commanding Army: Based at Tai Chi Hall, with three sixth-tier commanders. Gu Changze’s faction withholds its pay and provisions during the succession crisis 939 940.
- Palace and border armies: Gu Changze controls the palace’s publicly known elite Dao soldiers, while Gu Changqing commands hundreds of thousands of border defenders 940.
- Yaksha patrols: Patrol the lake and inspect travelers. During the Dragon Palace upheaval, security tightens and sixth-tier demons supplement the usual fifth-tier aerial patrols 876 958.
- Windriding Whale cavalry: Domesticated Azure Sea whales travel through water and air. Each carries seven cultivators with coordinated spellcasting, treasure-use, and formation duties; Gu Xing’s later escort includes 3,000 fifth-tier Dao soldiers 973.
History
Gu Jingming’s Reign
The previous Water Virtue Dragon Lord dies in the conflict with the Blood Demon Cavern, after which Gu Jingming inherits Azure Sea Lake’s Three Stars Water Fruit Status. A decisive battle drives back the cavern’s army, deters outside powers, and wins Gu Jingming broad support among the Pure Water Demonic Dragons 899 939.
Over more than a thousand years, his government strengthens the lake until it holds the advantage over the Blood Demon Cavern. His good relations with the Demon Emperor also contribute to prolonged stability 886 943.
Princes and Court Rivalries
Gu Xing’s status as rightful heir does not prevent Gu Feng and Gu Rui from gathering competing factions. At a banquet attended by the Thousand Mechanisms Demon Sect’s holy maiden, Gu Changze’s Seven Sword Slaves launch an attack on Gu Xing that threatens to overturn the court 899 900.
Gu Xing subsequently secures the Spirit-Commanding Army and the Water Tiger Tribe. His Northern Sky Prison exploits increase his prestige, while the contest for the heir’s position becomes openly hostile 894 932 939.
Jianmu Crisis and Succession Struggle
Gu Jingming and his wife become trapped inside Jianmu. Their absence turns the dispute among princes into a struggle for both the Dragon Monarch’s throne and the Three Stars Water Fruit Status 939 940.
Gu Changze allies with the eighth-tier Fragrant Consort, while Gu Changqing gathers border troops and support from 100,000 Flame Mountain Dao soldiers. Gu Xing counters by securing the Water Owls and human cultivators alongside his existing followers 940 941.
A Dragon Palace banquet is arranged to settle the dispute without a destructive war between the lake’s clans. Gu Xing reveals eighth-tier Sword Way cultivation and confronts both uncles; powerful outside Fruit Status holders also take an interest in the outcome 943 944 956 957 959.
Gu Xing’s Accession
Gu Xing wins the Dragon Palace struggle and gains the Three Stars Water Fruit Status alongside his Sword Way status. The palace announces his succession three days later; he formally ascends two years afterward 966.
Gu Changqing loses his title and is reassigned. Gu Changze, the Fragrant Consort, and their allies are publicly condemned 966.
Reforms Under Gu Xing
| Area | Changes |
|---|---|
| Agriculture | Lakeside land becomes public spirit farmland. Improvements to farming methods earn official recognition and rewards 967. |
| Taxation | Taxes are repeatedly reduced, with another reduction planned by the Grand Secretariat 967. |
| Cultivation access | Free Dao Palaces admit ordinary cultivators and mortal commoners. Poor residents can borrow to obtain pills, artifacts, and cultivation methods 967. |
| Public office | A new Dragon Gate trial system allows successful candidates from smaller clans to obtain official rank and court salaries 967. |
| Commerce and construction | The Dragon Palace funds rebuilding, expands markets, and develops the underwater streets 967. |
| Military advancement | Military merit earns equal treatment regardless of clan or birth. Members of prestigious bloodlines also serve as ordinary frontier soldiers 967. |
| Nobility | Hereditary privilege is abolished; titles, stipends, and rewards depend on contribution to the lake 967. |
| Resistance | Gu Xing crushes a plot to restore the old order, confiscates property, reduces noble ranks, and suppresses the Ghost Flood Dragon rebellion 967 969. |
| Administration | Du Ziqian and other officials handle government while Gu Xing spends most of the following sixty years cultivating in seclusion 967. |
External Relations
- Blood Demon Cavern — Closest major enemy, bound to the lake by generations of bloodshed. Both sides have killed a previous Fruit Status holder of the other. - Blazing Sun Mountain — Connected through Jiaozhu’s marriage to Gu Jingming. Jiao Xiu supplies Gu Xing with rare cultivation materials and remains attentive to the lake’s succession 885 958.
- Flame Mountain — Sends 100,000 Dao soldiers supporting Gu Changqing’s faction. Its Lord of Tail Fire, Yanli, also comes at Gu Jingming’s request because she owes him a favor 940 958.
