Background and History
Founding legacy and the Uchiha crisis
Konoha was founded by the Uchiha and Senju clans, whose strength established the village as a major shinobi power. The Uchiha later distinguished themselves in several wars, including by repelling the Hidden Mist Village's offensive during the Third Shinobi World War. 1 11
Following the Nine-Tails attack, suspicion that the beast had been controlled by the Sharingan severely damaged the Uchiha's standing. Konoha's leadership forced the clan to relocate from its longstanding compound, deepening resentment between the village, its higher-ups, and the Uchiha. 1 2
Internal power struggle
The village's leadership was divided between the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and Danzō Shimura. Danzō's Root Organization continued surveilling and targeting the Uchiha even after previous plans against them were cancelled. 20 21
Root repeatedly escalated internal instability through abductions, infiltrations, planted evidence, and attacks intended to implicate the Uchiha. The clan's police force and its elite members instead defended Konoha against the resulting threats, gradually shifting public perception in their favor. 29 43 45 46
Uchiha restoration and change of leadership
The Uchiha's successful escort of the Land of Fire daimyō, defense of villagers, and exposure of infiltrators restored much of their reputation. Hiruzen subsequently authorized the clan's return to its original compound. 62 63 67 121
Tsunade won Konoha's Hokage election by a landslide and formed a council of advisors. Soon afterward, Danzō's remaining Root forces infiltrated the village; the Uchiha, Hyuga, Anbu, and other Konoha ninja united to clear out moles and invaders. 142 143 147
Current conflict
Under Tsunade, Konoha rejected Kumogakure's demands concerning its failed operation against Hinata. Kumogakure and Iwagakure mobilized against the village, while Sunagakure offered support. 150 156
Konoha's forces entered open conflict with Kumogakure. Uchiha Fugaku led a force toward Iwagakure and successfully forced its withdrawal through a surprise attack, allowing the Uchiha to redirect toward the Kumogakure front. 157 158

Institutions and Defenses
