Background / History

The Uchiha were one of the two clans that founded Konoha. They built a reputation through repeated wars, including reportedly halting the Hidden Mist’s offensive during the Third Shinobi World War with the strength of one clan. Their power, elite shinobi, and pride nevertheless made other villagers and clans wary of them 1 11.

Five years before the story, the Nine-Tails attacked Konoha while under Sharingan control. Though no proof directly implicated the clan, the incident permanently intensified suspicion toward the Uchiha. Konoha’s leadership subsequently ordered the clan to abandon its ancestral grounds and relocate to a compound beside the village wall—effectively isolating it from Konoha’s center of power 1 2.

The relocation divided the clan. Some members advocated rebellion, while others sought compromise with the village. Fugaku was caught between Konoha’s pressure and radical demands from within his own clan 1. Sasuke’s insistence that he had no choice but to stand with the Uchiha helped push Fugaku toward a more clan-centered position 4 18.

As tensions escalated, the clan expelled Anbu and Root infiltrators from its compound and began reorganizing its internal leadership and Military Police Force 18. It later defended Konoha against infiltrators, exposed transplanted Sharingan users, and punished its own lawbreakers under the same—or harsher—standards as outsiders 43 44 45 46.

After repeated demonstrations of loyalty and competence, Hiruzen Sarutobi ordered the Uchiha’s return to their original station. The move restored much of the clan’s public standing in Konoha 121 122.
