Background
The family is an old poison-attribute clan whose members inherit the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Soul and its lethal toxin. Its two branches occupy separate estates on the same otherwise deserted street in Heaven Dou City; ordinary people avoid the area because of the clan's reputation for poison 1.
The split began under Dugu Hai, who believed that strengthening poison to its limit could allow a Titled Douluo to condense a Seven-Colored Poison Pill and eliminate the Martial Soul's defect. He ordered the family to follow the Poison Cultivator path and cut resources to the Cultivating Serpent Branch, prompting Dugu Bo to leave the family and cultivate independently 28.
Dugu Bo later dueled his elder twin brother, Dugu Hao, before either became a Soul Sage. Dugu Bo nearly crippled Dugu Hao's Martial Soul, then advanced while Dugu Hao remained unable to break through and ultimately died from accumulated Jade Phosphorous Serpent toxins 1 28. The feud passed to Dugu Hao's son, Dugu Shuo, and Dugu Bo's granddaughter, Dugu Yan.
Under Dugu Shuo, the Poison Cultivator Branch treated Dugu Feng as its chance to fulfill Dugu Hai's ambition. Dugu Feng's premature Poison Attack, Innate Full Soul Power, and later success with Tyrant Poison made him the branch's central hope 1 7 28.
Organization
Leadership
- Dugu Shuo — Clan Leader during Dugu Feng's youth; directed the Poison Cultivator Branch, maintained the ancestral inheritance, and later became a Titled Douluo 2 480.
- Dugu Feng — Succeeds Dugu Shuo as Clan Leader and ultimately transforms the clan's Bloodline through his ascension as the Asura God 456 498.
- Dugu Bo — Powerful elder of the separate Cultivating Serpent Branch; his status as a Titled Douluo long served as the family's greatest public deterrent 1 76.
Cultivation Branches
| Branch | Practitioners | Method | Consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control-Type Cultivating Serpent Branch | Dugu Bo, Dugu Yan | Prioritizes control and amplification skills; avoids highly poisonous Soul Beasts to delay Poison Attacks. | Poison backlash is less violent and occurs later, but cannot be permanently avoided through this path alone. 2 28 |
| Power-Attack-Type Poison Cultivator Branch | Dugu Shuo, Dugu Feng | Cultivates and fuses multiple poisons into Mixed Poison, pursuing Tyrant Poison and eventually the Seven-Colored Poison Pill. | Produces greater offensive power but causes earlier, more severe Poison Attacks. 28 79 |
Hidden Force
Dugu Shuo maintains a concealed underground force of Poison Spirit Masters. Other factions know only that the family possesses an unseen deterrent, which helps explain why it can resist more powerful forces despite its limited public numbers 31.
Martial Soul Defect
The Jade Phosphorous Serpent's poison is both the family's weapon and its inherited death sentence. Poison accumulates within the user's Bloodline and eventually erupts in a Poison Attack; unchecked outbreaks can kill the cultivator 28 498.
- Earlier Poison Attacks indicate denser and more dangerous inherited poison. Dugu Feng's first outbreak occurred before his Martial Soul Awakening, when he was only four years old 1 6.
- Rapid cultivation and powerful poison-type Soul Rings can intensify the danger, making the Poison Cultivator Branch's members especially vulnerable 17 28.
- A Poison Attack can also endanger a cultivator's partner, making marriage and succession a clan-wide concern 76.
- The clan historically suffered scarce population and frequent premature deaths; Dugu Shuo lost eight wives while attempting to produce an heir 1 2.
Attempts at Resolution
- Soul Bone buffering — Dugu Feng proposes that Soul Bones can draw away or buffer the toxins. Dugu Shuo tests the theory by absorbing a ten-thousand-year head Soul Bone 17.
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — Dugu Bo's hidden medicine garden suppresses his Poison Attacks and enables long-term cultivation. Its herbs later become a shared resource for the family 28 115 116.
- External Soul Bone detoxification — Dugu Feng periodically detoxifies clansmen, increasing the clan's birth rate and making Dugu Manor noticeably livelier 152 379.
- Poison Pill transformation — After Dugu Feng's godhood, every member develops a Poison Pill that absorbs accumulated toxins. Poison becomes a strength rather than a fatal flaw 498.
Assets and Territories
- Dugu Manor — The Poison Cultivator Branch's large, maze-like estate in Heaven Dou City. It contains forbidden courtyards, an Ancestral Hall, and later becomes increasingly populated as the clan's birth rate recovers 1 152.
- Jade Phosphorous Manor — Dugu Bo's separate manor, marked by a plaque bearing the name “Jade Phosphorous”; it houses the Cultivating Serpent Branch 1.
- Ancestral Hall — Holds the memorial tablets of Dugu Hai, Dugu Hao, Dugu Xin, and other ancestors. Dugu Shuo uses it for major family decisions, cultivation, and rituals honoring the clan's inheritance 2 28 271.
- Underground cave — Secret base for the family's hidden Poison Spirit Masters 31.
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — A hidden medicinal garden in Sunset Forest containing rare herbs, powerful Cold Poison and Fire Poison, and the environment that allowed Dugu Bo to survive his toxin burden 115 116.
Notable Techniques
Tyrant Poison
The Poison Cultivator Branch's supreme secret art, used to combine multiple poisons into an overwhelmingly lethal Mixed Poison 35.
- Dugu Shuo can silently spread Tyrant Poison across a battlefield after activating his Martial Soul and Spirit Rings 35.
- The technique is regarded by the branch's members as an honor to witness and a symbol of their inherited path 35.
- Dugu Feng later manifests Tyrant Poison directly, demonstrating the superiority he claims for the Poison Cultivator inheritance 301.
Seven-Colored Poison Pill
The long-sought ultimate result of the Poison Cultivator Branch's research.
- Dugu Hai theorized that a Titled Douluo who condensed the pill could contain all poisons and alter the Jade Phosphorous Serpent defect 28.
- Dugu Feng's successful poison cultivation and ascent to godhood realize the broader goal, causing the clan's Bloodline to evolve 498.
- Dugu Shuo develops a Seven-Colored Poison Pill immediately after the clan becomes descendants of a god 497.
Relationships
- Dugu Bo's Cultivating Serpent Branch — Rival branch descended from Dugu Bo; their feud originated with Dugu Hai's resource policy and Dugu Bo's duel with Dugu Hao. They gradually cooperate when external threats and the poison defect demand unity 28 76 498.
- Heaven Dou Imperial Family — The family holds influence in Heaven Dou and is relied upon for poison expertise, though Dugu Shuo favors a cautious, low-profile approach to imperial conflicts 21 271 308.
- Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect — Shares Heaven Dou interests with the family; the relationship deepens when Dugu Feng marries Ning Rongrong 21 456.
- Ye Family — A long-standing allied family. Dugu Feng's marriage to Ye Lingling further joins the two bloodlines 10 456.
- Spirit Hall — Views the Dugu Family as a major threat after repeated interference with its plans. Bibi Dong orders intelligence gathering and assigns poison-specialist forces against the clan 200.
- Clear Sky Sect — Dugu Shuo seeks to remain a temporary follower rather than expose the family to direct conflict while Dugu Feng grows stronger 271.
Story Role
- The Dugu Family begins as a feared but declining poison clan divided by generations of resentment and a fatal Bloodline curse 1 28.
- Its hidden Poison Spirit Masters and Tyrant Poison establish it as a force capable of retaliating against sects that target it, including the Elephant Armor Sect's conspiracy 35 37.
- Dugu Shuo prioritizes family survival over open political involvement, concealing the clan's strength while allowing Dugu Feng time to mature 76 271 308.
- The discovery of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well gives the family access to medicinal resources capable of suppressing poison and strengthening its members 115 116.
- Dugu Feng's detoxification efforts reverse the clan's population decline and create a stronger generation of Spirit Masters 152 347 379.
- Dugu Feng succeeds Dugu Shuo as Clan Leader, and his marriages to Ning Rongrong and Ye Lingling establish major alliance-based bloodlines for the family's future 456.
- Following Dugu Feng's ascension as the Asura God, the family becomes a divine Bloodline clan free from the Poison Attack curse 498.
Trivia
- The clan's two branches own the only two estates on their street in Heaven Dou City 1.
- Dugu Bo's branch kept its internal conflict discreet because public awareness of the split would weaken the family against outside powers 76.
- Dugu Ba and Dugu Lingyun were born with Poison Pills before the clan-wide Bloodline evolution, which Dugu Shuo recognized as evidence of Dugu Feng's transformed inheritance 477 498.
- Dugu Ba later awakens Twin Martial Souls: Overlord Poison and Saint Heart Twin Begonia 518 519.
- Dugu Lingyun awakens Twin Martial Souls: Tyrant Poison and the Nine Abyss Sky-Suppressing Pagoda 520.
